Chapter Master re-rolls and modifiers

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I have been at the "understanding" that modifiers are applied after misses are dealt with. Which means if a space marine hits on a 3+ and is armed with a thunder hammer, the -1 to hit would mean the 3s will miss and you can't reroll them.

But even if that was the case, Chapter master says "You can re-roll hit rolls for attacks made by models in friendly <chapter> units whilst their unit is within 6" of this model."

It doesn't at all say failed hit rolls, just hit rolls. It just doesn't make sense to me really, and chapter Master, while still good, isn't really maximized for the 2CP I spend for it, if you really can't re-roll 3s.

What's the take on this? It's been bugging me for a little while now

Yes, when a rule doesn't specify failed rolls you can re-roll the before-modifier successfull rolls to try and get an after-modifier successfull roll.

BS3+ model with a Thunderhammer and you roll a 3?
Re-roll failed hit rolls = you aren't allowed to re-roll it because it's a successfull hit before-modifiers.

Re-roll hit rolls = you are allowed to re-roll it because you know it would fail after-modifiers.

That's why everybody loves rules like the chapter master one.

Cool, thanks! I'm quite glad I was correct on that. Chapter master will be used a lot in that case.
