Coming back to the game and with a lot of questions

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone. Last time I played 40k was 6th ed so I know nothing on how to play now. Been keeping up with some of the fluff somewhat. Me and some of the other players now have a place to play now when this gift from Nurgle goes away. So now I gut questions on how to get back in to the game.

What books are needed to play now?

I a space marines army that I've used for ultra marines, space wolves, and blood angels. Fluff wise I just say it's experimental chapter to see if a chapter can be made out of other space marines. I've named them Heavens Wolves. Getting to the point can you make hybrid army now?

The new primas marines, are they needed?

Speaking of hybrid armys I understand eldar and dark eldar can be used as one army now called Ynnari. How does that work? Do you pick any models from both armys and call it one big army? If so then is it hard to build and play them?

Back in 6th I borrowed an IG army to play and loved it. It was an all vet army with tanks and air support. Only played it once but it tabled the other guy. As I understand Vets are no longer troops and now scions are the new vets. I was thinking of having them as a second army with the trouble? Can you have a baneblade as part of your army?

Can you you mix anything as one army?

Thank you for your answers.

You'll need the core rulebook, the codex for whatever faction you're playing, each of the Chapter Approved books, and whatever Psychic Awakening books apply to the faction you're playing. There are also some factions that are affected by some campaigns; and look for the free FAQs/errata at GW's website.

The "best" Adeptus Astartes lists tend to have a balance of legacy and Primaris Adeptus Astartes. The Primaris models aren't needed, but many players think that the Primaris will eventually (perhaps years from now) replace the legacy Adeptus Astartes entirely. Your best bet for an answer to these questions is in the Adeptus Astartes category, finding whichever forum fits the codex you're using.

The rules for the ynnari are covered in an issue of White Dwarf magazine (you can purchase the electronic version from GW's site if you can't find the hard copy) and one of the Psychic Awakening books. There are some aeldari units that can't be in the army (mostly drukhari/dark eldar). Your best bet for advice on the ynnari is in the aeldari forum (the main one, not the sub-forums).

Your best bet on the Astra Militarum question is in the Astra Militarum forum.

You can mix anything in an army, but it won't be battle-forged (you won't be able to use certain elements of the game that tend to be very important to how an army plays - Stratagems and the like).

Welcome to the B&C and back to the hobby :) The B&C can cover all of your questions, for Guard ones you should visit the barracks :tu: Vets still exist as an Elite choice, Scions are Stormtroopers. You can take Baneblades in a few Detachments easily enough (Supreme Command especially for Guard) along with variants. Detachments are what you do to build your army, so you can mix and match them depending on what you want to do such as load up on Heavy Support.

Greetings brother!

If you want to make a purchase and definitely get upto date with the latest fluff offerings then the main Rulebook is a great place to start.

Long story short: Abaddon cut half the universe in half, Eldar woke up Gulliman and the Admech went all Attack of the Clones. ;)

As concerns your impressive collection you will find that "Keywords" for each unit denote how they interact etc with rules within the game. Again though the main rules clear this all up.

Enjoy being part of the hobby community here!

Well let ask this questions. With rumors of 9th ed rules coming around in the summer. Should I wait for that to drop and just buy up models? My reasoning for this is when 6th came out you can use your 5th codex until the new one came out. With 8th and this is what trip me up was how your rule book us also your codex. But now with all the books out, is it still use the new ones and the old ones are useless?

You'll need models before the rules are any use, so it's a good idea to focus on them whether the rumours are true or not :tongue.: Things may work differently with GW's new approach but even if that's the case new books will come at some point. You can work on your models and see how things pan out :smile.:
