Over in the DA forum, there has been a discussion about the Pennant of Remembrance and it's ability to give an effect akin to a FnP to Deathwing units around 6". However the problem is whether that applies to mortal wounds. What makes this issue particularly perplexing is when I asked the GW employee (this was a few months ago) whether the relic negates mortal wounds, he specifically said no, which cost me the game against an IK player. I figure if this is a generic FnP to deathwing units, then it would mention something about mortal wounds on the data-sheet, no? I'm willing to keep an open mind on this, especially when that GW employee has been giving me false information more than once.

So what do you think, does the relic apply to mortal wounds?

Rule:

Pennant of Remembrance When a friendly DEATHWING INFANTRY model within 6" of a model with this Relic would lose a wound, roll one D6; on a 5+ that wound is not lost.

From the core rules:

“Each mortal wound inflicts one point of damage on the target unit. Do not make a wound roll or saving throw (including invulnerable saves) against a mortal wound – just allocate it as you would any other wound and inflict damage to a model in the target unit as described above.”

I interpret this to mean that the mortal wound is allocated to the model, then the banner cancels it.

You got the logic backwards and your GW employee doesn't know what he is talking about. Unless it explicitly says it doesn't work against Mortal wounds it does indeed work against those. Mortal wounds simply are wounds that bypass any kind of saves and inflict one damage. The Penant is worded exactly the same way as other FnP-like abilities so there's no reason why it shouldn't work against Mortal wounds as well.

Echoing the others - it definitely works on mortal wounds. It’s all about timing.

1. Roll to hit

2. Roll to wound

3. Make armour/invuln saves

4. Determine damage (for multiwound weapons)

5. Suffer wounds, or make FNP saves against any wounds you’re about to suffer (this is important because for multi-damage weapons you end up taking 2 or more FNP saves even if the model only has one wound)

Mortal wounds skip steps 1-4. As others have said, they bypass hit and wound rolls and the chance to make an armour save, but because FNP style rules occur “when you would take a wound”, not even mortal wounds can bypass them
