Knight Rampager w.i.p.

Recommended Posts

I’m looking at getting into chaos knights and was wondering if a 2000 point army is viable? I’m not interested in anything else chaos just these and was thinking about getting:

Knight Tyrant

Knight Rampager

Knight despoiler

Pair of War Dogs

Looking at the codex and the tyrant is a lot of points for one knight but is it worth it? Any tips or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I have a Desecrator turning up this week to kick things off.

They're viable, but it's good to take a cp battery or two. There are armies/lists out there that will ruin your day, but thats with every army. My advice is abuse the fact your Despoilers can take two of the same gun, and that Chaos Knights are Specialists bar none. The tyrant is cool, but I've not seen one perform well by themselves. Also, decide which type of house you want to use before delving too deep, it definitely defines play style.

Also, as a chaos faction you are highly encouraged to play aggressively. I can not stress it enough, do not stay still unless you have absolutely no choice. You don't suffer penalties for moving, and your stomps can hurt tanks if needed in a pinch.

It depends what you want to run with. If you want more guns, go Despoilers/Tyrant. If Melee is your bag, Rampagers are disgustingly good at it. Wardogs can fit in any list, so don't be afraid to get some.

I'd say magnetize your Despoilers guns. Double thermal for tank hunting, and double avenger for hordes. Your personal choice on the carapace weapon. Don't do melee with these guys, the Rampager does it much better.

Your Desecrator will do best babysitting Autocannon Wardogs so you really only need the one.

I'm honestly not sure where the Rampager sits. I love the model and plan on having three, but I've yet to find out if they can make their points back or not against a decently competitive list. However as stated previously, this is your melee knight and I do know when they make it into melee they will most likely delete what they are touching. Its just if they can make it im not sure on.

If you wish to go with the Tyrant models know they will be targeted turn 1 by quite literally everything that can shoot it, they are worse in melee than a normal knight, and their shots are random. However when things go right, it's a sight of carnage unrestrained. High risk for high reward.

Wardogs actually perform better for chaos than loyalists weirdly enough. Both are top notch at their dedicated jobs.

Also the chaos knight book is the next PA book to be released when the schedule goes back to normal.

I ordered a pair of war dogs along with 2 rampagers this morning so that’ll give me 2 rampagers, 1 desecrator, 1 despoiler and 2 war dogs. Next payday I’ll buy a tyrant and another pair of war dogs I think.

Looking great! I have used colourshift paints on my Knight too. Mine is supposed to represent the dual loyalties to the home Forge World and to Mars itself. I like how you have decided to have a backstory to explain your paint job too. I'll have to step into this forum more often. As an imperial lad I tended to ignore the Chaos faction forums but this one has a lot of potential. What colour is the trim going to be painted?

Thought I’d have a go at doing plasma on the knight today with my airbrush and it turned out really really good. I’ve never really been that impressed with my airbrushing until tonight with this plasma effect. It needs a bit of neaten up work but I really love it.

I’m struggling to find a suitable colour for edge highlighting the colour shift paint. If anyone can recommend a colour feel free. I’m thinking silver but I’d like to get some other peoples advice before I start the highlights.

I think straight silver would look odd - as much of a pain as it will likely be, I think you need to do a mix of silver or white and the dominant colour in that area (so, green and/or purple) so that it looks like a brighter version of whatever colour is next to it.

Looking awesome!

From my experience with the color shift paints, whatever you highlight them with becomes the dominant color. So for a purple/green shift, if you highlight with green it will make the model look like a green model with purple flashes. Kind of like the zebra stripe question of white horse black stripes or black horse white stripes.

I ended up highlighting mine prior to adding the colorshift or interference paints after some experimenting. This let me just use silvers and washes. Then I just overcoated the whole model. I use the Golden Interference line so they’re already quite transparent. They even make them to only add the shift over another color. So you can undercoat and highlight in one color, then add the next color over it to get the color shifting effect creating a ton of combinations.

I realize this is less helpful now, as you already have an awesome paint job. But could be helpful in the future as you expand your army. I think you could also just use colored metallics to highlight if you feel like the model needs it.

I joined a chaos knight group on Facebook earlier today and asked this question and the general consensus was it’s way to complicated and technical to highlight colourshift paint and to leave it as is. I’m going to do the recesses though and edge highlight the gold when I get to that stage after tidying it up.

Thanks by the way for the suggestion.

I have a friend who used color shift a lot and had similar issues, I showed him oil washes as a thing to ground it so to speak and it went really well and looks awesome. Essentially rather than highlighting, you’re muting it a bit where appropriate. Edited by PeteySödes
