Lost Phantoms - A Deathwatch Alternative

Hello people, long time no see.

I originally started on here kicking off the Yaujta themed Deathwatch that have since disbanded. It was my introduction back into Warhammer 40k after a very long hiatus from the game (3rd edition) and i was merely 14 at the time. Then 14 years later got back into the mix of things and started deathwatch due to its versatility and creation. Starting off I really wanted them as true hunters, and thus created the idea of using the Yaujta (Predator) concept that jump started my kitbashing journey.

Sad to say, after a bit of time, I have since sold them off, for I was spending mass amounts of money getting addicted to creating. But since then it had sparked me starting a freelancing business but also took away from working on something that I started. So i scrapped EVERYTHING. sold off as much as I could to seed the startup funds needing to produce a better portfolio.

Now 2 years later I have come back to the idea of Deathwatch for a soup army for the misses to play against me during quarantine and an ongoing event on IG known as the Iron Sleet.

This became the birth of the Lost Phantoms....

a project that's been in the works for a couple of months getting concepts down and brainstorming. The Lost Phantoms were inspired by @empty_bunnie (ig) concept of primaris marines and @jameshanson3143 (ig) wonderful mind and his creations along with a couple of art pieces. I wanted to incorporate humans in exo suits / mech suits into the mix. As I noticed a hard in between in the 40k universe. Thus creating the Lost Phantoms. a band of imperium survivors who lived on the outskirts of the emperors reach that have been brought together due the destruction of their homeworlds due to xenos infestations. They have been recruited by a rogue trader with connections across the galaxy and the funds to support his cause, equipping these condemned warriors with exo suits to match even space marines. The mercenaries and defenders of the outskirts are led by his daughter, Valeria Nightingale. It it is her force that answers the call of the inquisitor that they find themselves in the mix of the primogenitor (ironsleet) these will count as deathwatch.

So pretty much an introduction post, that will be followed up by a closer look of the models and such. I havent been on here lately and just wanted to come back home after having many of experiences. I appreciate your time on reading, and hopefully I will keep this up like I have before.

Valeria Nightingale - Watch Captain with Thunder Hammer + Storm Bolter

( Still Determining Warlord Trait For Narrative Purposes / Relic - Bane Bolts )

Valeria is the daughter of a Rogue Trader ( have not come up with a name yet, but essentially Watch Master ) that is very well off financially to the point he is well diverse in culture, knowledge, tactics, and a true imagination to bring it to reality. Working with the Inquisition, The Lost Phantoms are essentially a mercenary force with advance technology ( no one knows how he came across this) where he properly suits his soldiers in exo suits to be on par with the famous Space Marines.

However, for his daughter she deserved something truly special. As the captain of his force, he personally designed and build Valeria's exo suit, capable of aerial maneuverability and to withstand heavy fire. Being a firecracker, he gifted her with a thunder hammer and custom designed stormbolter.

Ever since the preview of Shadowsun, I knew i was gonna create something of this sort. Although heresy, I am fond of Tau design. While Imperium has more of an old school box aesthetic with rounded armor. Tau had more of a classic, gundam / mech aesthetic, that ive always been in love with.

Keeping most of the shadowsun model, I really just removed the tau iconography, where the second arms go, added grav chute panels, custodes arms, custodes aquilon stormbolter to make it more of a custom piece and to express the design to host banebolts. The feet were the main thing i had to get rid of, so filed them down, and threw some panels from the shadowsun model on there and threw aggressor landing pads on the bottom. I originally had a different head, but it just didnt fit with what I had in mind. So used an sisters of battle head. The second pic is an older pic, but provided a different angle, first pic is an updated piece. lots of distress showed up when i did close ups, so i had to do some cleaning. Acetone and qtip were used, and then a buffer with a dremel to smooth out as much as i could, the rest Im chopping up to battle damage.

This was the original concept art i found on pinterest that sparked more of the idea when the shadow sun model came about.

I like the model and the concept art. Have you thought about doing a similar one but with a huge ass sword? Like that Rita chick from Edge of tomorrow with the exo suit?dhW6J66.jpg417o8X0.jpg

I've thought about it, but since my deathwatch wouldnt get doctrines because of soup, it's still viable to use chainswords for extra attacks

The idea was always in mind to create and exo suit, I had seen alot of talented artist in creating the Inquisitor range. Along with some other shows and artwork as well. I had started this idea with a toned down version in the astra militarum department with heavy weapons squads. using terminator legs and tactical marine torsos holding a heavy weapon. Originally chose mortars that were strapped to their backs with lasguns, just didnt feel right, so they are toting heavy weapons which was the spark of these guys. Following empty_bunnie Jackalopes on IG. I utilized phobos torsos with Inceptor legs, particularly the incursors from Shadow Spear box, they were a bit cheaper and I already had inceptor bits. Cutting and forming poses are not that difficult, its just a lil bit of time of cutting, since they are essently easy builds theres alot of gap space that let me place tac in the crotch area and cut to fit the inceptor legs. with the use of accessories and hip guards, didnt really require green stuff because everything is hidden underneath.

Not wanting this to be SPACCCEEEE MARINNNNEEESSSS i wanted to utilize tau components to create more of a mech feel, since I wasnt sure about the pads i kept the quantity down, and test it out. which I actually like more, you will be able to establish the different squads. One squad will have it on the right, the other will have it on the left. with MK3 shoulder pads for armor appearances.

what took so long to post these pics was because of these guys here, I wanted a viable shield option but due to COVID and quarantine i could not find these damn shields no where, then a month later, find a couple. I had originally tried out clear blue rubber spacers with necron shields, too big. then eldar wraithguard shield, that was a no. then forgeworld admech shields were going to be the choice till I found some van saar shields, and honestly glad i waited it out.

Tempestus scions heads were the preferred choice for these guys. just gave them more of a human feel.

And thats the squad, since its soups and doctrines dont apply i stuck with chain swords on the guys.

So

sergeant - combi plasma / chainsword / and will model a combat shield later on

2 vets - stormbolters and stormshields

1 vet - frag cannon

1 vet - stormbolter and chainsword
