the Mittermeier Crusade reignited

Recommended Posts

...so, hey brothers. inspired by my brothers in the chapter, i will start posting here about my Crusade.

the Crusade will be re-ignited and modernized:

-i put all my older models that were badly painted or broken after years in storage. thousands of points of black templars lay there. they will never be sold ofcourse, and they look certainly "usable" in case i want to play a big pickup game. but the "core" of the crusade has to be models that i have only recently glued/painted/perfect condition etc. i hope that my painting skills will improve, and i really want, from *fluff* perspective, to imagine my Marshal modernizing his crusade force structure as i buy new (Primaris mostly) models. the aggressors as first addition really got me hyped. (in real life i like monitoring countries' weapons purchases etc. so you could see why i like the concept)

-the following conditions were used to seperate "new crusade starting core" models from "reserve forces" models:

1. the paintjob has to be presentable. unfinished is OK, but big mistakes that maybe can be fixed but *i* am not skilled enough to fix were discarded.

2. the models have to be solid in the current ruleset. small tactical squads to fill detachments are OK, multimelta dreads  (too slow for cc, too few shots for shooting) are not. no need to be top tier, but some choices IMHO are just not worth considering.

that said, the current list is my current forces that made the cut:

-Captain (powersword, master-crafted bolter)*

-Lieutenant (powersword)*

-Company Ancient*

-2 x 5-man tactical squads with plasmagun and powersword sergeant*

-1 x 5-man scout squad with combat knives

-3 x Primaris Aggressors with boltstorm gauntlets*

-Ironclad Dreadnought with chainfist, heavy flamer, hurricane bolter *

-Dreadnought with twin lascannon/missile launcher*

-9 x Assault Terminators (a tenth one has a broken t.hammer, but seems i could save him with superglue. we'll see)*

-Land Raider Crusader (i always thought they are pretty bad rules-wise, but i have read of people saying they are good with Litany of Divine Protection etc, so since it is also in good condition I will include it in the force temporarilly)

* completely unpainted/WIP

i won't post pictures just yet because i had trouble finding the colours i wanted to start painting. (quarantine stuff, shops havent had their stocks refilled etc). but i hope to be posting them within the end of this month or start of the next one :smile.: after my country's reopening allows for some games, i may start posting battle reports too.

Looks like a reasonably fluffy list so far! Looking forward to seeing some pictures or hearing about great victories! I'd love to share more about my own battles with a similar list if you're interested. (Probably long overdue to update my own thread)

Just piping in to let you know that you brightened my day.

Now I just have to get the idea of German comedian M. Mittermaier performing ADB's Helsreach out of my head....

...well you guys haven't seen Legend of Galactic Heroes...

'80s anime where a democracy fights a galactic empire. In a plot twist at some point, a military faction within the empire stage a coup d' etat and establish a benevolent wise emperor guy(called Reinhard von lohengramm-funny cause i saw a battlebrother here called Reinhard) whom everyone agrees is a good guy and then turns into a fight of, quoting the democrat protagonist, "good vs good". Wolfgang Mittermeier, aka "wolf der Strum", was sort of that emperor's right hand man/top military commander. hence my nickname :tongue.:

this guy?

They use a lot of german names - so it would fit for Black Templars so far.

I like Reinhard von Lohengramm (just the Name)

I dont know that universe yet - I like the style.

No comment :tongue.:

I won't call you "mein Kaizer" because i trust there are no Heretics here :D

It'd would have been a bit too much of a coincidence. But funny nevertheless. Well, apologies if I derailed this thread :p

Saw the trailer on Netflix, I guess and did note a lot of German names. Obviously did not batch the Mittermaier thing.

Associations are a funny thing.

Still lie the idea. I mean, they have Brian Blessed voicing Gortrek. It'd be a bit like Futurama's Bender voicing Talos.

Or Rowan Atkinson doing Talon of Horus....

Come to think of it, Hugh Laurie would make an excellent Fabius!

I'll stop my ranting now. Back crusading you go!

news: got to another FLGS, they lacked black sprays/colours etc., but had a copy of Faith & Fury (believe it or not, i hadnt bought it yet) and some other colours that could help polish other models. while filling my force with endless tacticals seems counter-productive for my purposes of modernization, hence most of my older models wont receive any treatment, i have *specific* targets:

if i am succesful, i could "save" a jump pack chaplain, an apothecary, and 4 x company veterans. the apothecary is nice to have fluff-wise, but the veterans and jump chaplain are top tier units. it'd be sad not to try and save them.

important question: assuming i want to take intercessor sergeants with p.weapons/hammers. where can i find these weapons? i have no problem buying some kit, but i want to schedule it and as far as i know, the basic intercessors kit itself doesn't have such options for the sergeant.

The special weapons are on the different primaris chapter upgrades. Like the blood angel one and space wolf ones has chainswords, the dark angel one has a powersword. UM one has a powersword too but its UM specific, as is the powerfist that comes in the Imperial fist one (has an IF symbol on it).

Arguably, the best value is the salamanders one which has a couple of thunder hammers (well the same one x2) and handlamers. Also comes with 2x of the backpack brazier which is a pretty cool bit.

But really. if you want a wealth of potential weapons to use, I'd get a vanguard veteran kit, where you'll get many hammer, swords, fists, claws etc. Mk. 7 arms are pretty close to indistinguishable from Primaris ones, so you can use them pretty freely.

(first time i post a pic here, tell me if it works :tongue.:  i think i'll be able to "save" the chaplain and company vets, but it will take some work. the predators and rhinos are in super bad shape, but they should be replaced anyways. we shall see)

97135888_10221992258546327_8014748250982 hmmm. lots of details need to be improved, but at least somehow presentable... can't work on my completely unpainted models like marshal/ancient/aggressors due to lack of black spray, but i will see what work i can do on the old ones to pass the time till then.

UPDATE ON LIST:

the more i think about it, the more i will probably not include the ironclad dreadnought on the mainstay of my forces, and hence wont work on it soon. simply put, its anti-infantry firepower and cc can be found elsewhere, between additional troops/additional aggressors etc.

current forces(will soon edit names with Faith & Fury generator!):

Commanders:

Captain Mittermeier with powersword/mastercrafted bolter

Chaplain Ryker with Jump Pack

Emperor's Champion Paragund

Marshal's Household:

Apothecary Lichtner

Ancient Tovarus

4 x Company Veterans

10 x Assault Terminators

Vehicles:

Dreadnought with twin lascannons, missile launcher

Land Raider Crusader

Crusaders:

2 x 5-man tactical squads with plasmagun, powersword

1 x 5-man scout squad with comban knives

1 x 3-man aggressors squad

EDIT:  i also found another old undercoated model... a metal model whose sword had broken down. a very particular BT character. i glued the sword with superglue, so far no difference seems visible, but idk, experience says it won't hold. lets see if the High Marshal will aid the crusade :smile.:

next 10 days' goals:

working on the Land Raider Crusader, 5 x Assault Terminators, 2 x 5-men scouts teams(the terminators had been almost completed, most of the scouts were  painted long ago by a friend-hence why they will be better painted than my usual minis :biggrin.: ). By Sigismund, it will start looking like a Crusade !

confirming  the High Marshal is functional/start some working on him (surprisingly, glue-wise, things seem fine :smile.: i got a new case to transport more fragile miniatures too, so i hope he'll be fine. i never tried helbrecht on the tabletop, and the current iteration just seems the most powerful yet, giving the equivalent of 4 command points via being a chapter master(2), his blade being comparable to a relic(1), and his aura being worth at least 1 cp imho)

also announcement: i have always failed to apply transfers on my models. i have stockpiled lots of transfers, tried one on an unassuming tactical marine, and it seems to work. finally, i can do some stuff!

thought, more of a list-building nature:

champion + helbrecht + 4 x company veterans + 10-man Crusader  Squad* on a Land Raider Crusader. how badass could it be? O.o i think its "all your eggs in one basket" thing, but i intend to have more scary stuff for the opponent to think about. thoughts?

* initially thought the 5 assault terminators, but wouldn't helbrecht's aura go to waste with them?

Helbrecht is indeed powerful, but he is expensive too. Personally I don't run him but that's more for fluff reasons. With our reliance on Chaplains those full rerolls really only see value with shooting units. I'm thinking he would be amazing and fluffy with drop pods full of stormbolter & Powerfist veterans!

status report: found black sprays/colours at last. this changes the plans a bit. first of all, repairing the high marshal is nice and all, but he DESERVES to be painted after i've had some more practice. i'll first do the captain and ancient, and also 2 x 5 man Terminator Squads/scout squads.  aggressors will probably be next month.

i will hold off on using decals, since i counted just enough decals for 57 models. i will use just 27 pairs, and keep 30 pairs for Primaris models later on.

regarding new models, i have tons of old ones to paint, so i will be buying approx. one box per month, gluing and painting it before the next one.

my current question is how to handle Tanks with Primaris. i have time to figure this out; this will only matter WAY down the line during the Primaris modernization, since i must first get an additional kit of aggressors and some intercessors.

further decrease in active forces- careful obserers may notice no ironclad/dreadnoughts/tacticals that i previously mentioned.

i thought about this again. in general, my total "old" BT models are comparable to what a "codex" chapter would consider a full "mechanized battle company", 100-ish marines and more than 10 vehicles. but theres no point in using all of that in the core of my new crusade, hence why you don't see any dreadnoughts or tacticals in my calculations/pics anymore. maybe some occasional game once stores reopen, but they are not models i will concern myself with right now.

the scouts are fine and have a place in any space marine chapter currently ,representing recruits.future hypothetical scout bikers could also be fine. the crusader squad and company veterans have zero primaris equivalents, and the terminators have a unique cc-only spot not found in primaris. characters are.... acceptable, if temporarily, after all primaris cant be transported via the LRC, which is important for possible helbrecht/company vets/champion, and the jump pack chaplain is obviously here to stay.

but from now on, everything that HAS proper primaris equivalent,  the  fire support(aggressors/hellblasters/anything), the close support, and battleline squads must ALL be primaris. everything else like the tactical marines, the dreadnoughts, the rhinos and predators, must go. i am not staying they are bad in-game, just saying *i* personaly don't want them. hence why i ditched the aforementioned models and (mostly) used models that have no primaris equivalent.

Interesting! Hard to say anything to the contrary!

But if you do decide you want to keep and use any of those units, there's always going to be a tactical discussion available and those willing to make those units work, I'd say here, more than almost anywhere else!

Looking forward to your next update!

of course, and i will always be part of that discussion as reader or commenter. like i said, i don't think *in game* the old units are bad. i have tons of good things to say. the real reason is more fluff in my imagination. 50% fluff, 50%  belief that in some 5-10 years oldmarines will massively lose support/possibly going legends. also i like many of the new models more, but its hard to imagine a percentage of that/model taste is too subjective.

  • 2 weeks later...

update: of course i am excited about all the new releases like all of us. this slightly changes my schedule. i bought a second aggressors box today, to form a 6-man aggressors squad as a core fire support unit in my army. i will not buy anymore models, instead finishing up current ones, until the starter box hits the shelves and i see some rules.

until then, i am thinking of a way to transport my future assault intercessors and bladeguard across the battlefield. rather than impulsors, i am thinking of something radicaly different: what i call the "assault pattern repulsor". the idea is, a repulsor with a las-talon, a twin lascannon, and full of fragstorm grenade launchers. the end result is a vehicle adept at tank-hunting with 4 "lascannon-equivalent" shots per turn, and a disturbing number of other shots that are all assault-type. the intention is for two such vehicles to carry forces as well as shoot enemy tanks. thoughts?

Frightening idea! That is definitely going to focus your opponent's attention. Very expensive though, and lacking the 4+ invul and 14" movement an Impulsor provides. But they're not as scary as the Repulsors!
