Illuminor Szeras to cost 100-150pts

The guys over at Warhammer Community are running a HQ Deathmatch, using a pairing elimination system similar to Reddit's '40K's worst unit' competition (Which the Obelisk won).

 

In this division, we see HQ units that are costed between 100 and 150ptals, and guess who is participating? Illuminor Szeras!

 

Where the picture does show Illuminor Szeras in his new upgraded form, we aren't given enough details, so it is open to debate whether they might just be using his old datasheet.

 

There are also a few more clues we can pick up here if this Deathmatch is using the new model:

 

● Quite sadly, he falls to Ragnar Blackmane, and almost in one turn.

 

● He seems to be lacking a good amount of attacks, something that is commonly seen through-out our HQ range.

If he kept his eldritch Lance, which I hope he did, he should have been able to kite Ragnar for a few turns if the range stayed the same. If not, then perhaps instead of choosing not to kite, he might have a different gun/weapon.

 

If he is using the new data sheet, it’s most likely that he remains a support character rather than a melee beatstick, which is not a surprise, but is encouraging that some of his inevitable upgrades just weren’t relevant to the fight at present. Ragnar isn’t a psyker, after all.

Szeras is currently just over 100 points so nothing new there unfortunately.

 

With 4 attacks and a 1 damage weapon Szeras isn't killing many characters in one turn without generous dice. I don't know anything about this Epidemius character but he really shouldn't have much a chance against Blackmane in combat. That said with a 3+ save and no invuln there's no way barring terrible dice on Blackmane's end (S6 AP-4 D2 A7/10) he shouldn't have even gotten to attack so there may be something new on that front?

Definitely. In fact using the old Szeras datasheet, there is no chance he would survive 10 attacks hitting on 2s re-rolling 1s, then wounding on 3s with AP-4 and 2D.

 

Going by averages and that he just barely survived that first turn charge, he is probably T6 with an invun save (unless he has a -1 damage from incoming attacks)

Comparing the old data sheet for Szeras against the new Blackmane and I don’t think there’s anyway old Szeras survives the charge. Blackmane gets 10 attacks(the article says he charges) at D2 damage. Hitting on 2s, rerolling 1s and wounding on 3s. At ap-4 which is ignoring Szeras‘a armor save. Outside of a huge whiff, that easily kills old Szeras.

 

Which to me means they had to be using a new profile.

 

Theres a few options that could have boosted Szeras’s survivability. Most likely it’s a combination of invuln, toughness and wounds. I’m not good enough at math to speculate what it may be.

 

Szeras also gets a chance to swing back, and it sounds like he whiffed himself. Now, Blackmane doesn’t look like he has anything spectacular for CC defense. T4 and a 3+/4++. He does get

6Ws which isn’t terrible.

 

But I’m going to assume Szeras has a similar CC profile with limited attacks and probably only doing 1d instead of multiple wounds.

Probably drawing too many lines here, but apparently the first round of matches were short. And with Szeras going up against Epidemius, a model with 8 wounds, maybe his weapon does have decent damage. Just depends if that statement was regarding this match-up. Edited by Get Thokt

Epidemius has eight wounds? It would take two perfect rounds from the current datasheet to do that much damage, more likely a 3+ round event depending on a shot or two before combat. Hardly what would qualify as short but this could be the fight that cause the caveat of "for the most part" in the article. Edited by NTaW

The fact that he killed Epidemius tells you he's got some kind of damage output in melee but he is just a Cryptek, he's probably more dangerous at range.

 

The fact that he tanked Ragnar for a round is impressive. Ragnar should mulch any support character in one go. Sezeras has to have decent toughness, saves or damage reduction or some combination of all three.

 

Given that he's on a very large base I'm guessing T5 or 6 minimum, 3+ save and probably 6 to 8 wounds. Beyond that he likely has an invuln or damage reduction. My guess is he has number of melee attacks with good ap but only fair WS and doing 1 damage each.
