Volkite Charger counts-as when it's most of your army?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at maybe eventually possibly getting an Alpha Legion army consisting entirely of Horus Heresy models - specifically, one each of the FW Praetor and Terminator Praetor (Chaos Lord with power sword and bolt pistol and Terminator Lord with power sword and "Volkite Charger"), a squad of Lernaean Terminators (Chaos Terminators with Power Axes and "Volkite Chargers") and a box of Mk IV Marines, a box of Volkite Chargers, and some AL pauldrons and AL heads for them, as two squads of Chosen (with "Volkite Chargers"). Everyone but the FW Praetor will have a Volkite Charger, so it becomes a matter of what rifle-sized gun makes sense for an entire army of Volkite Chargers in 40k. There's the obvious option of running them in narrative games with the point value and profile for a Volkite Charger off of the Tartaros Terminator datasheet, but I'm wondering what to do in a matched play game. Maybe Combi-Plasma, since everyone can take it? Combi-weapons are the obvious choice, just because they're available to Chosen, Terminators and Termilords alike. Thoughts?

EDIT: Note, I'm entirely willing to grab Volkite Calivers instead of Tactical Squad Chargers and maaaaaaybe the Culverins for heavy weapons. I'm open to possibilities, I just want my expensive, tiny AL army to have as much volkite as possible, just for the cool factor.

Edit 2: Remember, I'm looking for a rifle thing that both Terminators and Chosen can take, and a heavy weapon for Culverins. Seems everyone agrees with my thoughts on the Reaper Chaincannon for the Culverins, which is nice.

Some of my characters in my Night Lords have volkite weapons (like the praetor from Forgeworld). I usually run them as Combi-plasma or combi-melta, but when I have them on the field I make sure all my volkite represent the same thing to keep confusion down.

As a TO, I would be iffy as it's not WYSIWYG, but I'd probably let you get away with it if all of it was a single weapon, but not as combi-plasma. A combi-plasma has both a bolter and a plasmagun muzzle, whereas yours only has one. I'd probably allow it if every single one of them was a flamer (heavy flamers on Termies), plasmagun, or meltagun.

Bear in mind, I'm a single TO offering his opinion. I would ask your local TO what their thoughts are if you want to play in their tournaments. Your mileage may vary.

However, you wouldn't need to decide now - you're effectively proxying, so you can change it from game to game.

If you question is using a non-WYSIWYG weapon as the most competitive weapon, it's combi-plasma though.

Pfft, nobody's talking tournaments - though I appreciate the perspective. I was just thinking what would make the most general sense, and what's most similar to the volkite weapons we've seen in 40k as far as profile. I've since decided that using the most dakka version of a bolter-type profile possible (combi-bolters for all, reaper chaincannons for culverins) would probably be the best way to go.

Also... if I'm not mistaken, entire Termie squads can't take heavy flamers. :biggrin.:

I use lernaean terminators and praetors and I count mine as either combi plas if running them AL or as inferno combi's if running them as scarab occult. Both in my personal fluff represent alpha legion lernaean brotherhood fyi.

Anyway the main point is that those specific bits do not count as multiple different weapons across the same army list. Never had a problem with it so far.
