Hello Knights

What kind of non-melee weapon do you give your strike squads?

I'm looking at: Psycannon, Psilencer and Incinerator. While Incinerator has a good stat, the short range might be a problem.

How do you equip your squad and how well do they fare on the table.

Of the current 3 squads built-

Psilencer for the halberd squad (justicar hammer)

Incinerator on the falchion squad

Psycannon on sword/ staff squad

The other squads won’t get any once I get around to building them except purifiers just cause they can take double

Of course if you're playing friendly, just slap psilencers and psycannons on everything and go heavy on the tide of convergence.

Id stay away from incinerators, even in friendly games unfortunately. They're cursed like most flamers with mostly useless range. And by the time you do get in range, you'd have missed out on a couple turns of bolter fire, and you're also lacking a cc weapon.

They really dropped the ball with flamers in 8th.

Removed interactions with open topped vehicles and buildings, and removed viable ways to deliver them with the 9" from enemy deployment restrictions, and the removal of templates stopped them hitting multiple units at once.

I quite liked templates and their shenanigans.

I'm glad they got rid of templates and blast markers - always a pain in the butt to use, and usually lead to "hard feelings" between opponents about what exactly was under the template.  But, they have missed the mark with making them really worthwhile in 8e - definitely room for improvement in 9e.

Giving flamers some rule to ignore cover or get extra hits against units in cover/infantry are such obvious ideas that it baffles me that they gave them nothing.

I think "AoE" weapons and the wounding/rend systems are some of the few things that 9th edition has to fix.

I throw in a psilencer for any Falchion squads. It's the same price and I don't mind missing out on the melee attacks. I like having most of my units able to benefit from the psi weapon Tide in some way.

That has not been my approach, but I see that Colin (in the Alamo GT thread), has used this same approach as you very successfully. I might need to reconsider my position on that. Will require a little more playtesting.

I have never equipped a Psilencer weapon with any of my units, let alone my Strike squads. As GK's are my main army, i am using them a lot, against chaos, xenos and Imperium armies (yes, a heretical act). And a weapon with no AP isn't going to be effective against most of these armies' major units. I tend to prefer higher AP anyway, not sure if thats just me.
