Basically Beast Arises but for the Indomitus Crusade from what they are describing.

 

Just hope editorial can manage it right this time

Stream seems to suggest that Guy Haley will be writing the entire series. If so...I am actually ok with this. The better writers can go on to do their own things, and at least the series will have some internal consistency.

The community post clarified that it’s a multi-author series. Haley’s the ‘lead author’ so he and Kyme are deciding on overarching story bits while multiple authors write the prose. Time will tell if it works or not.

I love the concept, but I’m not entirely confident in BL’s ability to execute. Hopefully this is closer to a less bloated Horus Heresy than it is to TBA.

 

Did anyone else get the sense from Haley’s interview that BL has other multi-author series coming down the pipe. It sounded like maybe there are other series with other ‘lead authors’.

Yeah that's fair of course! Just finishing Devastation of Baal today and he expands on those comic-book Gathering Storm bullet points well. Expecting more of the same in this.

Yes, it's closer to the old cover style like the Ventris' novels but those back then were "dirtier" and "darker", you know?

 

Would've loved to have a Badab War or something comparable instead of Indomitus. But well, it is what it is.

 

Oh and I know it's the squad type marking but it does look like an Alpha. *Ultramarines are infiltrated by Alpha Legion confirmed*

If it's as as tight-nit as the Beast Arises then that's a pass. If it's closer to the Siege where they're all pushing the same story, but with a different cast and flavour per book, I'll pick up the authors I like. Bit late for this to be coming out though, you'd think they wanted the books re-introducing Guilliman (Dark Imperium) to be the ones this early in the timeline, but what can you do?

 

Hopefully it's a mutually consensual partnership between GW and BL, we all know how that went over last time.

Re the Kyme comments, from what I've gathered over the years he is Hayleys editor, from Dante to Dark Imperium & Plague War etc... ADB even thanked him for his patients and advice when penning Spear of the Emperor. These are all books that i thoroughly enjoyed on different levels, and while i know that it's the Author who takes the glory or flack for the finished product, it also takes a good editor to keep things in check.

 

I think his involvement is less a sign of something to be worried about, and maybe more a sign that there will be a cohesive level of consistency to the series.

 

Time will tell.

As far as I know Kyme edits a lot of the major authors. Whatever you think of his writing, I don’t think his participation in this series as an editor bodes ill.

Maybe if Kyme is focused on the editing of this series it might have a better reception compared to the inconsistency of The Beast Arises.

I'm fairly excited, although i'm not sure on what grounds based on how The Beast Awakens went and how the Horus Heresy evolved. The Siege seems to be holding together for the most part so far though.

 

Also I really like the cover. I'm not sure it's good, but I really like it.

According to Twitter, Guy Hayley said that Dawn of Fire is set before the Dark Imperium trilogy, which isn't a surprise for me as DI happened as the closure of the Crusade.

 

Nonetheless, DI 3 is still coming and the other two will be back again, as well.

Its not like the Beast Rising series didnt have editors, probably Kyme too given thats been his full time job at GW for many years and he writes on the side. Kyme i think is a much better Editor than writer and hopefully they are playing to their strengths in the team up. Ive been working through Haleys 42m stuff and its pretty damn good so heres hoping they stick that out.

Seems odd to be going back to the start of the Crusade again with the main 40k plot going forward though? Though the WD series on Indomnitus has been quite interesting and has set up a few possible hooks.

I like that they're going back to fill in gaps. Space Marine Conquests was supposedly doing that, but in my opinion, beyond The Devastation of Baal, it failed doing that. And that was a Haley novel, too. Having a proper series to cover the Indomitus timeline with its century of events is a good thing, especially considering how much stuff was relegated to Codex and rulebook footnotes since 8th launched. There are too many unused hooks for stories there to just skip ahead.

 

Then, it also makes sense to me to do it now, rather than up til now. I'd wager that 9th will be bumping the timeline forwards again, so authors also know which parts to explore and feed into the new advancements, campaigns and upcoming Codex revisions. This could easily lead to new trilogies starting with Indomitus-era openers, Psychic Awakening middle pieces and finishers firmly set in contemporary 9th/Codex timeframes.

Cover looks terrible and I don't think Haley is the right choice to kick this sort of thing off. That being said, being a long-running and meandering series means there will inevitably be gems here and there if they manage to convince some of their better authors to participate

I will say though... the cover is really nothing like the typical 40k novel. It's way more... New Jedi Order than anything we're used to. W/e it's good enough

Cover is awful, logo is worse..,. Book sounds fab. Have they mentioned a number in the series? Or is it open ended? I hope they have a goal in sight, even if it’s not announced. Although the seige books have given me great confidence that BL have got their stuff together for a multi author series.

I'll just add here that I like Nick Kyme's writing. He has a clear and readable style. I've only read his 30k work, so I can't comment on everything he has written, but I like Vulkan Lives, his Aeonid Thiel audiodramas, and I am currently enjoying Deathfire. He linked up well with Dan Abnett in writing them.

 

He is also a highly regarded editor at BL, so his involvement is a plus. Hopefully BL have learned lessons from TBA and DoF will be a lot smoother.

 

I can't see Dan Abnett, ADB or Chris Wraight being involved, and I guess Josh Reynolds is out, but BL has a growing stable of highly competent authors for Haley and Kyme to call on (Justin D Hill, Mike Brooks, Rachel Harrison, David Annandale, Alec Worley, Ian St Martin, Nick Horth, Gav Thorpe). There are also some of the newer Inferno! authors I have enjoyed too, like Thomas Parrott and Robert Rath.
