Would DW Phobos work?

Recommended Posts

Let me be perfectly honest with you - thanks to incompetent rule writers, the only Phobos unit in DW are Reivers. That's all. Yes, we're puzzled why stuff perfectly suited to DW and using the same way of fighting is unavailable too. So far, no one managed to produce any sane explanation, even lame pad excuses fall flat given the DW pads working perfectly and all the official art/studio models of DW Phobos units released right at the start of 8th edition.

So, you have three options - either buy the Phobos models and count them as something else for the time being (Intercessors?), wait hoping new DW codex corrects this inanity, or build small core of other DW units for now and see about adding Phobos later. Or, if you have good friends who won't complain about color schemes, simply model DW Phobos units but use Ultramarines or Raven Guard rules. They can replicate most of what DW can do, on top of having full Phobos access, and ton of special rules and stratagems of their own. Sorry :ermm:

Hopefully a new DW codex will provide us with the rest of the Primaris range to utilize. I'm using Phobos models to counts as my Veteran Squads along side my Inter-gressor squds. I also converted a Primaris Captain to be a counts as Watch Master. And converted some Librarians to use too. My entire DW army is using Primaris models (Except the Venerable Dreadnoughts & the 2x Land Raider Helios) just doing counts as for them.

Let Primaris ride in a Blackstar while we're at it.

If Primaris could ride in a Blackstar I'd buy 3 of them no questions asked! (My "Veterans" already arrive via Drop Pod)

I have one and my Primaris ride in it just fine...

Fair point, my counts as models could use it, but they already have sweet drop pod rides. :)

I thought Phobos had been FAQ'd in to Deathwatch.  I'll have to go back and look.  However, couldn't you take them as a regular SM unit as part of your detachment as they still have Imperium keywords or am I getting that all wrong?

Primaris in Blackstars would be fantastic... I have three in my army, and set one up empty next to my small Primaris unit to represent them already having disembarked.

No, they weren't FAQ'd into Deathwatch. There were FAQs about Reivers in Deathwatch getting the phobos keyword, but the Vanguard units themselves were not added in.

Yes you can create another space marine detachment, chapter of choice, and fill them with Vanguard marines to your heart's content. No you cannot have imperium detachments, at least in matched play you cannot. You would have to take 2 separate detachments (one Deathwatch, one Space Marines) in a single battle forged army. Which further limits their ability to interact via stratagems, auras, etc...

If they were going to add Primaris to DW, the Blackstar would have to be replaced with a Primarisified version.

Not entirely true, as we currently have primaris options available to us. If you mean the Vanguard (phobos) marines, than you should understand that those are unrelated to whether they design a Primaris Blackstar version or not. Also the Tactical Marines and Veterans are not going away this edition, so the Blackstar is likely not going to change.

Our best bet right now is either they add the impulsor to our list of units in 9th, they actually introduce a new Deathwatch specific transport. My money is on a plastic Thunderhawk being released first.

From what I've seen of people asking on social media or sharing email FAQ responses, GW took the stance that having a stratagem to deep strike up to 3 units was good enough for our army. Not saying I completely agree but just wanted to put that out there. Hopefully that changes a little in 9th.

I don't know why they just don't add the Primaris keyword to transports and flyers. I'd love it if my Primaris could ride in my Land Raiders, or use my Drop Pods or the Black Star. Doesn't make sense why they don't. (unless they're planning Primaris versions of the models and they want players to purchase them that is)

Blackstar is only a few years old. I get them wanting to upgrade/replace rhinos etc. when the sprues are ancient and were too small to begin with. The Blackstar would be fine carrying Primaris, in my head-cannon, at least. Hopefully when the full compliment of Phobos is available to Deathwatch it will be amended.

Do you mean how many Primaris bikes a Blackstar can carry?...

Well, no. If they're so big they can't fit in, maybe Blackstars are in an exaggerated scale, and Primaris are understated. So a Primaris on a Primaris Bike (black and white, no doubt) would be massive, as a Blackstar can't even fit one in off of a bike.

So how many Blackstars can a Primaris bike carry?

  • 2 weeks later...

Phobos units would be really interesting in DW armies but for modelling issues (left pads moulded with the arms) only Infiltrators and incursors can take DW pads without cutting and filing so i really doubt that DW will get something different from these units

However even if DW will get only Incursors and Infiltrators they will be good units for DW armies IMHO
