Thokt Painting Scheme

Get Thokt

Recommended Posts

Hello all, with Goonhammer posting a tutorial on how to paint Necrons, I've decided to give my army a new paint scheme, the Thokt Dynasty!

The paint scheme for Thokt is more or less the ideal design I would like on my models. However when going through the list of paints used, the painter used paints from several other sellers.

Since I want to use just GW paints, I am wondering which GW paints bear the most similarities to the following:

Valejo:

• Model Colour Basalt Grey

• Model Colour Dark Prussian Blue

• Game Colour Stonewall Grey

• Game Colour Dead White

Daler Rowney:

• Indigo Acrylic Ink

Golden Acrylics:

• Satin Glazing Liquid

With the Valejo colours, I know these:

  • Basalt Grey = Dawnstone
  • Dark Prussian Blue = Kantor Blue
  • Stonewall Grey = Administratum Grey
  • Dead White = White Scar

I don't know the Ink or glazing liquid. However, you could probably use Druchii Violet for the Indigo Ink, and Contrast Medium for the Satin Glazing Liquid?

I have some experience painting blue on Necrons and recently scrambled to find replacement recipes for the Guilliman Glaze of yesteryear. Really I have juggled my way through I think five Citadel range shifts. Since there aren't exact copies of the pigments I have two options for most. I have no experience with the Contrast line but there may be help there as well.

Valejo:
• Model Colour Basalt Grey --- Dawnstone (close but a warm grey) or Eshin Grey (darker but much closer in hue)
• Model Colour Dark Prussian Blue --- Macragge Blue (a little lighter) or Night Lords Blue (a little darker)
• Game Colour Stonewall Grey --- Administratum Grey (warmer, a good highlight to Dawnstone) or Grey Seer (a little too light but easier to sell in a cold colour palette)
• Game Colour Dead White --- White Scar (chosen over Corax White since it's the layer paint)

Daler Rowney:
• Indigo Acrylic Ink --- Drakenhof Nightshade (maybe, that's such a distinct tone if you love it just buy the Indigo specifically)

Golden Acrylics:
• Satin Glazing Liquid --- see below

With the glazing liquid, it looks as though the intent is to use it to create your own wash. GW has two variants of this: Lahmian Medium for use with standard Citadel paints, and Contrast Medium for use with Contrast paints. I know the names may seem pretty self explanatory but they're designed to work with those lines so be sure to get the one that mixes with the paint you plan to use. If you were looking for a gloss or matte finish, those products in the GW line are Ardcoat and Stormshield respectively.

Hopefully this helps you out a bit. At least know that you've chosen the coolest dynasty colours so really no matter what paints you choose it will look awesome  :biggrin.:

Appreciate all the good help guys, thank you I'll start experimenting with some Immortals and hopefully be comfortable with the scheme before the Szeras model is released.

What do you guys think of using the new bronze style scheme we've seen used on Thokt? So perhaps the use of dark bronze with the blue instead of dark silver? Could it work?

I'd say why not, if you want that colour then experiment with it and let us see how it goes, no colour scheme is set in BlackStone

Cheers Mithril
