New person looking for advice

Hi,

I've been tempted by Orks for a while and with the new Gaz Model I've finally taken the plunge and ordered some stuff

My FLGS has done me a deal on the Ork half of PotW and I've ordered a few extra bits. Plus I've had a rummage in sprue mountain and found some Orks in there

So shortly I'll have

Gaz and Maki

10 Nobz

6 Meganobz

10 Boyz + extra Nob

10 Gretchin + Runt herd

5 Lootas

I'm also planning on getting a start collecting set for 10 more Boyz, 5 more Nobz and a Deff Dread

So where do I go from there?

Would a 2nd start collecting set be worth it to bulk out my Boyz and the Nobz to 2 units of 10

I'm actually not a great fan of the boyz and would rather have more high end stuff.

I'll be playing them as Bad Moonz as I want to paint Yellow and green (woo for contrast paints)

I'm just a casual player and what a fun army, although I'd rather not get tabled constantly

Cheers

With the new edition coming, it's currently impossible for anyone to guess what will be good in a few short months. With that in mind, I'd suggest to anyone starting any army to focus on stuff they think is cool, and when the rules are in the wild, fill in the holes for an army list.

Currently in 8th, I think there's multiple ways to get around running a bunch of boyz, if you don't like them. Personally, I ran a Big Vehicles list from August to February of this year, focusing on Bonebreakas and *orkanauts. With the Psychic Awakening supplement, I can only guess that it's even better, though I haven't had a chance to try (damn you, COVID!).

Also, there was a pretty good list that used two units of 10 meganobz each in place of 90+ boys. The idea was you can Da Jump them and force your opponent to either play around them, move away from them, or get murdered by by them. This requires using terrain well to protect the meganobz from being shot by too much, but who wouldn't love to field 20 of the biggest and 'hardest lads around.

Finally, I know buggy-heavy lists have been showing some legs.

Unfortunately, while all three of my suggestions here are pretty much boy-free, they do require 60-90 grots. I'm very hopeful that the new edition will eliminate the need to take so many minimum-sized grot units, but, again, I can't know for sure yet.

So, for now, I'd suggest to just keep picking up stuff you think is cool. The Start Collecting is a good deal, but if you're really not interested in boyz, the value of it plummets.

Hi Andy, welcome to the WAAGGHHHH! It seems to me that you're close to the point where you'll need to pick a direction for your ladz. Which way you go will dictate what models should be added.

Do you want to play a Green Tide? Add boyz. Lots of boyz. Boyz over toyz.

Do you want to play a Dread Mod? Add another dread, some mekboyz and maybe a Gorkanaut or Morkanaut.

Speed WAAGH!? Trukks and buggies

Once that's sorted and you've got some games in you can fill out your army, adding models to fill in gaps or you think'd be fun.

I started with an Evil Suns Speed WAAAGH!, and branched out to include a Dread Mob option. The Speed WAAAGH! is very fast and flexible, making it very fun to play if a little bit fragile. The Dread Mob is much more a hammer that just wants to get stuck in right away. I find it a very satisfying combination to alternate between.

I must confess one thing lead to another today and soon I'll be the proud owner of the following

Gaz & Maki

15 Nobz

9 Mega Nobz

A Snaz wagon

3 Killa Kans

Plus my already existing

10 Boyz + Nob

10 Grecthin + Runt herd

5 Lootas

I know I defiantly don't want a gork or morkanught I'm not a fan of big centre piece models

I'm happy to get some boyz, I know I'll need some to fill out my troops choices I just don't want 90 of them

Although I am eyeing up a set of 20 Boyz I've seen going cheap but they are the old Blackreach ones
