Forge World Dreadnoughts for Dark Angels

Apologies for the myriad of questions recently, however there is another one to add to the ever growing list..

Which one would you recommend is better for competitive play (contemptor ((mortis)) or leviathan), and what load-out would you go for? Of course with the 9th edition looming around the corner, everything is subject to change, but I like both of the models, so buying one isn't a problem for me, personally.

Reviving this thread.

What about grav-flux bombard? What are your experiences with those?

With magnetization, what size magnets do you use? Because I honestly don't think my 2x1 magnets will cut it.

Sure they do. Place two magnets next to each other in the joint, it locks in your preferred pose as well.

Thanks for all your responses!

As for the Leviathan - will probably be picking one up, in a few days from now, however still not sold on the weaponry. 2 storm cannons seem to be the way to go, but how about the other options - the grav flux bombard, siege claw/drill and the cyclonic melta lance? Are they any good? I envision having one melee weapon, and a storm-cannon, however want to minimise costs right now.

@aura-enchanted, as much as I like the deredeo dreadnought on paper, not a fan of the model, sorry!

@Stobz, I'm assuming you drilled those holes with a non-citadel drill. Mine only can do 2mm, unless there is a die or a chuck that I'm not seeing. How would you go around that - I would have to buy a new drill?

idk i think the pike noze body is neat, reminiscent of russian IS tanks, and the rest of the body is functionally just the weapons and contempor legs.

i dislike the mortis because to me it feels like the poor mans deredeo and because it felt like games workshop should honestly get rid of it as it has no official model.

I personally got myself a Dual Grav-Flux Leviathan last week, simply because the Grav-Flux bombards fit the "esoteric, rare weapons" theme Dark Angels have going on.

Additionally, the FW Indices got their FAQ/Errata. The Grav-Flux Bombard is now a Blast Weapon.... I feel REALLY sorry for hordes now against that gun :biggrin.:

And Skywrath: The problem with the Leviathan is that NONE of it's weapons are bad, but one (Storm Cannon) is better as an allrounder :laugh.: The Grav-Flux is the best switch-hitter, and the Cyclonic Melta Lance makes a mockery of vehicles, but the Storm Cannon is the most reliable.

Going one melee weapon/ranged isn't actually that good on the Leviathan though. Either go full melee (preferably claw and drill) or full ranged, because the Leviathan doesn't have as many attacks as it should (imo) and trading away one melee attack really hurts it if it gets into a fight.

If you're referring to the regular Mortis dreadnought, it's simply a Boxnaught with two of the same gun (though the regular Mortis does now have the issue of not having any left-arm guns now...) If you're referring to the Contemptor Mortis, see my previous comment.

In fact, on Forge World's site, both the Sons of Horus and Death Guard Contemptors are pictured as Contemptor-Mortis loadouts

Thanks for the response! That is exactly the reason I'm getting that leviathan with that exact armament. Not to mention in my Dreadwing themed list, it will go pretty well thematically. Surprised to hear you say that a mixed load-out is not great, wasn't expecting that. It seems I will have to buy all weapons, just a question of in which order.

I kinda like the mortis pattern... ... ... Maybe even more so, because it IS the poor man's deredeo dreadnought.

Surprised to hear you say that a mixed load-out is not great, wasn't expecting that. It seems I will have to buy all weapons, just a question of in which order.

It's because of a few things:

  1. The Leviathan has 4 attacks "base" when equipped with dual melee weapons. Trading each melee weapon drops the Attacks characteristic by 1, so that Melee/Gun build results in only three attacks (4 if it's charged/charges). Which is problematic as those attacks are MASSIVE OVERKILL on anything not in Gravis Armour or a vehicle.
  2. The guns are VERY short range for a Dreadnought, as the longest ranged weapon is the Storm Cannon array at a whopping... 24" (30" with our Turn 1 Superdoctrine at least) and the other two being 18" (24" only in our Superdoctrine). Or in other words: It's got the same max range as a regular infantry unit. (note: in a gameboard with the terrain density GW recommends, this range issue is actually pretty counteracted).
  3. The guns, aside from the Storm Cannon, are a bit swingy with shots, with either d3 (Grav-Flux) or 2d3 (Melta Lance).

So pretty much, amusingly if you WANT to do melee/gun, the only one that's really viable for that idea is the Storm Cannon array because it's reliable as it's ALWAYS 10 shots. Well, unless you use a Dreadnought Drop Pod.... But that's another can of worms

Honestly, I expect to see the Storm Cannon array be nerfed, even if it's slightly, because you only ever saw people running that one. Either that, or they buff the other two to make them a more viable choice. Either by a points change or weapon range change.

I kinda like the mortis pattern... ... ... Maybe even more so, because it IS the poor man's deredeo dreadnought.

Nah, it's not really a poor man's Deredeo. They have a similar role (Dakkanaught) but the Deredeo is locked into either dealing with Heavy Armour (Lascannons), Infantry (Autocannons) or a generalist (Plasma).

The Mortis has more weapon variety, the Contemptor-Mortis even more so, and as such they have a much wider variety of roles they can specialize in.

You know, now with the changes to Vehicles and Heavy Weapons, I could see more Contemptor-Mortis dreadnoughts on the field. Maybe a Drop Pod riding Contemptor-Mortis with dual Multi-Meltas?
