New Engine War Models: What did you get? How is it looking?

So I decided to start a new thread because the 'what are you looking forward to' thread was starting to spiral all over the place now that the book is out.

That in mind this thread is more or less specific to the new models. Please show pics if you have WIPs of your projects. Let us know what you found good/bad about building these, magnetizing advice, or anything of that nature....

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well the changing of my Avatar signifies the AP-2 D6 hole in my wallet!.... Thanks to you guys! ;)

I ended up breaking down and ordering two of the Flyer boxes and two sets of the Serberys Hounds.

This is quite a chunk of change, but I felt I'd always get a flyer, and I don't know if they can be magnetized so my thinking was one bomber, one Lascannon variant. Let me know if you think this can actually be done.

The Serberys are just purely purchased out of love of the model. I don't foresee using it in a competitive scenario yet, but 9th edition may change that. I have NO idea which to build.

So your turn. What did you buy? How is being built? (and if you have works in progress, please show them off.)

Broke the bank:

3X hound boxes

2X flyer boxes

1X copter box

rules

I love the sulphur houds, but will use Sterilizors for my flame weapons. The idea of two deep striking units that have a long range flamer is amazing to me. More so than my infiltrators. The ability to fly makes them a great late game unit imho, being able to redeploy over terrain, fly away for a late game landing, etc is amazing. They can also be a melee threat for weaker armies and their bonuses to attack and the stratagem to force units to stay in combat is another useful tool.

I love the raiders. I'll use them to push forward turn one, along with probably a dunerider with stick priests or a couple dragoons. That's a lot of area denying, and any fire aimed at the raiders gives me that much more time to get my mid-field army up close.

Copter just because, I hope I'll get some use out of it with the bombs and move to at least be a unit that disrupts my opponents flow.

I'll also tell you what I'm probably removing; robots and infiltrators.

I have 4 built robots, 2 unbuilt. I've run them as punchy robots and shooty robots.

I think the shooting mode has been the most effective, but the thought of punchy robots hitting my enemies lines often times makes them a prime target. I'm not sure why as they're not particularly effective. I'll probably use them every now and then, but as of right now I think they'll sit.

For the infiltrators I think that the bird guys do it better. I've got a unit built, and love the models, but they'll take a backseat unless I really need an additional infiltration unit.

Hmmm.. the Sterilizors do look interesting. All of these infantry models really are paper thin though. They won't last long.

I have been going back and forth on what to do with the boxes of Serberys I get, but maybe the answer is the Sterilizors for the mobile flamers (Deep strike) and then Serberys can default to Raiders. I really don't know.

I skipped the Pteraxii boxes entirely because they look like a nightmare to put together, a nightmare to paint, and a nightmare to travel with. lol

So if they turn out to be really good, I'll have to figure something out. I know GW's other kits with those plastic stems usually snap... about 1/3 have snapped on me and I use laser cut BattleFoam for all my armies.

This also scares me about the Archeopter. (I don't know why they got away from that sturdy, clear plastic stem. The new one looks questionable.)

- Removing Robots - Wow. To be honest mine have been sitting on a shelf for months. But I thought I'd pull them out for a while with the new rules.

For me I'm removing my Knights detachment to get new stuff in.

It will probably be a few weeks before I actually receive my stuff, so let me know if you think you can magnetize the copter. Also that stem business!

I'm on the fence about the Serberys. No idea  which to build. In fact I might just wait until 9th.

Started on the 3rd sterylizer build last night.

Lovely models, easy to assemble, easy to replace the horrible flying stand and use brass rod instead.

And will be easy to paint leaving the wings off. Really looking forward to working on them in the future, 6 1/2 left to build.

Also have a big bird as well, but won't get to that for a while I don't think as I've a Raptors space marines 1k army to do as a priority atm.

Good to hear the Pteraxii are easy enough. Maybe I should have bought them first! Shame about the flying stand though. I'll have to see about pinning them to bases. This was easy enough to do with Primaris 'flying' units, but the tiny stature of the Pteraxii may make this impossible.

Stolen from another forum:

Edit: Someone mentioned gluing the magnet for the door weapons on the inside of the doors instead of drilling holes.

I am waiting for 2 Pteraxii, 2 Hounds and 1 Flyer.

Pteraxii will be Sterylizors for sure.

Flyer will be fully magnetized.

Hounds... not sure. I like the Vanguard version a bit more model wise, but looking at the rules Rangers are way better (and also look cool).

Awesome find. I had to grab that image for my own kits since I really do want flexibilty.

I saw another video with some unnassembled look at the flying stand. It doesn't look horrible.... I'm still unsure.

That magnetize picture looks like something I will try. (Not sure about the wings though.) Also it looks like you could cut steps out if you want to just make 2 of the variants. In some spots it looks like it's meant to be press fit, and twisted into place (where the bomb array is) and I have to wonder if you truly need to magnetize that array? We'll see.

I think both Hounds look great. I do think they are going to be the most... uncertain build of the new releases.

I got the rules and the flyer, I intended to swap the wings with the engines from the tau tanks, but the one I thought I had was too damaged (the tank, not the flyer). So I have to get another devilfish to do the conversion.

I've been holding back on the new releases so far. At that model price, I'll definitely wait for 9th edition, and re-evaluate what makes sense and what doesn't.

Previous boxes haven't been built until today, so there is no way I'm cashing out for the ridiculous prices they ask for now (especially the riders). There is enough AdMech pile of shame for half a year at least...and another half year for knights...and another for titans...

I completely understand. I was on the fence a long time.

The way I looked at it is that I play very regularly, and aside from my Chaos stuff, Admech is by far my second biggest force. It's really up there, followed by Custodes.

I found a little discount place and recouped some of the cost in combined shipping. But I'm definitely holding off on building the Serberys. They just seem to be such an odd duck ruleswise. I think their true role will become very apparent in 9th.

And I'm glad others dove into the Pteraxii. I consider myself quite bad at assembly. People better than me will figure out the best way to assemble those fiddly bats. :)

The Flyer to me is safe. I like the model, seems straight forward and I know I'll probably try to use it in 9th.

About the flyer... I just saw a video and the cockpit shell is entirely clear plastic. I am starting to wonder if I'll just shade over the cockpit or leave sections of it clear.

This is what I mean... This is the approach I took with my Eldar flyer:

I think in a lot of cases it looks cooler than the clear cockpit, but I'm unsure on something as big as the Archeopter.

The plastic that the Pteraxii are moulded with seems springier, a couple of miss-handling events from me have them still at 100%, which is a miracle. Just flexing the thin bits of the models doesn't discolour the plastic and it slowly resets to where it was.

I have gone for one of each just to build them for now, the prices are just too high and I have already decided to divert funds elsewhere because of it(Nemesis Kickstarter). I can only hope that enough people feel the same and it hits GW in the pocket book enough for them to think about it.

I will build some Sterylizors because the Skystalkers are too similar to Infiltrators, some Raiders because I think I will be able to use them more easily but I have my eye open for the CC version in the new edition. The flyer will get the magnet treatment but I do like the bomber a little more than the rest because of the stratagems that come with it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Since this is kind of an assembly thread, I gotta ask again about how you folks did the side mount weapons in the front of the Arecheopter.

Mine are so bad I think I have to redo them. I did the bomb rack/twin Cognis Las mount that goes on the rear of the main hull. It's a bit tilted but at least it's very secure, and it should be fine.

But the guns I'm referring to are the 2 Cognis Heavy Stubbers, or the choice of the 2 Heavy Phosphor Blasters. In total, between 2 copters, I magnetized all 8 guns. I did a simple job by taking an exacto knife to the inner guns and cutting away that little slot that is supposed to into the weapon from the mount.

The guns aren't lined up great. I'm not sure how to make this work. I'm really disappointed GW made it so difficult to magnetize this part, but it's the difference between making a "Fusiave" or a "Stratoraptor".

Any do that magnetization?

Otherwise due to my work schedule since Covid is just incredibly heavy so it's taken me two weeks just to get this far and I haven't even started the wings! I would appreciate any advice.
