Zynk's Blood Angels

Noble sons of Sanguinius,

I'm making this thread to document progress of my Blood Angels modernization project. Goal is primaris bodies with old marine aesthetics. I don't have the bases done yet and I still have to highlight most of my models. If anyone has any recommendations for Baal-style bases I'd love to hear it.

Keep up the good work. As for baalite bases, i think of like a rad-soaked desert, blistering heat, noxious air, with remnants of stone and statues among ruins of angels. Another take could be a scene of junk and scrap survivors. If you're into the new indomitus era, maybe mutant alien tyranid bases consuming the very ground being fought over. ...or work towards incorporating the bases into a barren display board centered on an 8-pointed pile of skills stacked impossibly high. Though I think that was on another moon of baal? Don't recall. Read the Dante book if you haven't already, might give you inspiration.

Great start and good luck with your army!

Caine's ideas are all very good. In the less obvious Baal-theme, how about salt plains described in the already mentioned 'Dante' novel? There's a lot room for imagination here, the most obvious choice being the look of the salt mineral planet Crait (Star Wars).

Thanks for the encouragement!

Your models are well-painted. How will you decorate their bases?

I like the stone ruins idea.  Some kind of orangish-yellowish-brownish desert littered with sandstone ruins.  The martian style orange bases on the mechanicus models might be a good starting point.  I will have to plan it out and make some test bases.

Was it hard to achieve these dynamic poses with the Intercessor legs?

Not hard at all.  I just found the most bent leg and then cut off some plastic at the thigh/pelvis socket to make it fit well.  I occasionally had to use greenstuff but most of the time I could hide imperfections with the holster bits.  The upcoming new CC intercessors will make things way easier and I plan to make vanguard vets with that kit.

The white salt plains would definitely contrast the red, but I'm leaning towards the orange/yellow desert.  I haven't read Dante yet (embarrassing) but 2 recommendations from you guts was enough to get the hint!  I just ordered it :smile.:.

I really like your Ancient's pose! Gives the menacing feel of the Power Fists' weight.

Interesting approach to power weapons. Is it a drybrush technique? They look a bit like covered with frost with the grainy quality of the technique. I wonder how would they look if you applied just a touch of blue colour the the surrounding areas to simulate light being reflected from the nearest plates? Just a thought really :)
Keep up the good work!

  • 1 month later...

I've been working on the Baal-like base concept so here's my first attempt. I decided to go with astrogranite debris because I like that style texture. Next I painted a mixture of wild rider red and doombull brown as a basecoat then a heavy wash of agrax earthshade. Finally I'd finish it off with a drybrush mix of wildrider red and averland sunset. Honestly I'm having a hard time recreating the right mixture of paints so I need to stop by a hobby store and find the right colors... Anyway, I like how it turned out and it seems to work well with gold, black, and red.

I plan to give my BA some attention this weekend so hopefully more pictures to come!

I agree it's a good idea to give a subtle touch of blue in those prominent areas like you suggest. I tried that with the smashcap and mephiston but will have to do it for the sang guard at some point, too.

Forgot to ask: I've been putting off highlighting because I don't really feel comfortable doing it since it feels like a huge hassle.  Any tips to make it easier?

Highlighting is one of those things that seems daunting/a hassle before you start doing it, but once you start to do it, find your groove and what you like, it's easy.

For example, with my Dark Angels, I only ever do one or two edge highlights on non-characters (Dark Reaper main, Fenrisian Grey as the super edge) and it works fine enough for me.

Also: Nice looking Blood Angels! :tu:

With highlights - as Gederas says: you have to find your own way to it.

As for techniques, you either go for drybrush, blending, edge-highliting or a mixture of those supported by washes if necessary. And then practice, practice and practice some more. Or pay someone to do it for you ;)
There are some great painting tutorials to be found on YT where you can see how people handle their tools.

Base update. These came out a bit more orange this time around but I kind of like it. Here's the recipe:

  • Astrogranite Debris
  • 50/50 mix of Doombull Brown and Wildrider Red
  • Agrax Earthshade wash
  • 75/25 mix of Averland Sunset and Wildrider Red

Indeed, brothers. One chainsword isn't enough violent ripping death for those uppity xenos and heretics these days. I'm slowly painting the bases for the remaining 9 DC so I should have some more pics up eventually.

Here's 5 veteran "intercessors" fresh off the painting table (minus the bases... ran out of astrogranite debris). I really enjoyed painting these guys and the +1 attack for 1 cp is very nice! I plan on making vanguard vets eventually since the gold helmets look fantastic.
