awesome, thank you everyone for the crash course. i think because my exposure to abnett has more or less been limited to the HH...i haven't been exposed to his excesses (or maybe that's his lack of 40k excesses).

He did, at least in the first book, which I reread recently. For the other two I'm not 100 percent sure.

So what then is that small warp ship that is referenced to? IIRC the Guncutter he used wasn't a warp capable ship.

 

I think what makes Abnett's work so great, especially the Eisenhorn novels, is that he explores a part of the 40k universe that is beyond the mere bolter-porn.

Been a while since I read Eisenhorn but yeah that is what I thought too. I was responding to what @Xisor said.

 

Indeed the gun cutter is his space to planet transport not interstellar.

 

My point stands though for Swallow (all the Knights Errant stuff) and Haley (Belasarius)

 

Intrigued now whether all three (four) Eisenhorn books are explicit on his Warp journeys mode of transport?

Another little tidbit, Enuncia is an ancient daemonic/alien language, often used as a weapon. First mentioned in the Ravenor books, a Space Wolf used Enuncia during the Battle of Prospero (Prospero Burns), and Enuncia was also part of the scrapcode the Word Bearers/Dark Mechanicum used against the Ultramarines during the Battle of Calth (Know No Fear).

I wasn't going to say anything because my memory isn't great but I just listened to all three Eisenhorn novels and don't ever remember him traveling through the warp in anything smaller than the rouge trader ships.

 

Slightly off topic but does anyone know if Pariah will be available as an audio book any time soon?

Last I heard Abnett said he was actually now writing Penitent. That was at start of this year. Bloody hope so been a loooong wait.

I think Enuncia gets a bit of a shout-out in Forgeworld's HH8: Malevolence. There's a Psyarkana wargear option called The Ever-Changing Axiom, and the description is of sounds spoken as incantations, beliefs and references to a "tongue of creation" that can bend and shape reality.

I believe lorgar and argel tal use it in betrayer. Though it could easily be generic sorcery.

For the completionist and seeing how old Inferno is up for grabs:

 

I believe the Iron Snakes made their first appearance in a comic strip written by Abnett in a very early issue of Inferno.

I recall the story follows two Librarians who are evaluating a battle with the Dark Eldar.

They are playing Regicide, while flash back scenes show parts of the battle. ;)

 

IIRC, the young Librarian mentors the cast of Brothers of the Snake. The Snakes/ DE feud is a central motive in BotS.

It's not explicit, but there's definitely concepts of sounds being compressed into words and unbelievable feats like lorgar healing himself post plasma cooking.

Along with the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, it will be my return to 40k.

 

Eager to see some of these references, etc.

Would be cool to have some connectiona within Brother's of the Snake, as well.

Found a potential inconsistency. The hunter Skoh appears in both the short story The Curiosity as well as the first Ravenor, but seems to die in both stories?

Not an inconsistency.

 

One is Fernal and the other is Feaver. It's mentioned in Ravenor that the Skohs are a dynasty of hunters, if I am remembering correctly.

But didn't both Fernal and Feaver die in Ravenor? Fernal was the one who seemed to have died in The Curiosity. But in Ravenor Feaver finds out that Ravenor's crew had killed Fernal.
