Deathwatch army/model line in a weird place

Recommended Posts

Like the title said, the introduction of Primaris to the Deathwatch has left things in a really weird place for the army.  So many things in the model line/army list seem to have arbitrary and unthematic restrictions and it feels so unnecessary, because nearly all of the miniatures are available to make a more coherent and thematic feeling Deathwatch on the tabletop.

--I've this elsewhere so I'll start here:  Corvus Blackstar can't take Primaris units.  I get some of the vehicle restrictions for Astartes Primaris, but this one has always struck me as unnecessary, and basically blocks anyone not running non-primaris from wanting to pick one up.  It's a new enough vehicle that it doesn't seem weird to have Primaris ride in it.  What, are we going to get a Primaris Blackstar sometime?  I doubt it...so let us take Primaris in it!  It can take BIKES.

--Next up, the lack of access to phobos outside of Reivers.  These are super thematic units for Deathwatch, totally ignored.

--Getting mixed-loadout Primaris like the veterans.  There's already a new-ish veteran kit for this so I see why they aren't rushing to put out a Primaris kit equivalent, but soooooo many people just kitbash primaris with the veteran kit to make awesome infernus bolter and deathwatch shotgun wielding Primaris...it would be cool to acknowledge these instead of having huge marines with 1 wound.

None of these things seem to be getting addressed in thee 9th edition update either.  Pretty baffling to me honestly.

You're not alone in any of these points. A LOT of people are begging for the phobos/vanguard line. I don't see it happening personally. I'm sorta happy we got the melee guys right before the melee buff. Baby steps I suppose.

The only reason we don't have Primaris in our lovely flyer is because it would break the dam and every other Chapter would want the same with their individual transports. When that happens we will also get the same treatment.

I agree with you Eisenhorn but unfortunately according to GW marketing politics:

-Firstborn veichles can't transport primaris units so they force you to buy the new ones

-only Infiltrators/Incursors have separate left shoulder pads so they can get the DW pads and are available in DW codex

-until GW will make a proper kit for DW primaris you will have only the option out of the box cause if you start a New DW army with only primaris models that's what You have in the kit and if GW cannot sell you a thing this will not be in the codex (or third part guys like Chapterhouse will profit selling you after market parts)

Sad but true

That's a good point, and when I think about it I'm not sure what the deal is with the primaris restrictions on flyers in general.  In the case of rhinos and landraiders fine I get it you want to update your astartes tank range, so push the new transports with the rules.  But with regards to astartes flyers, they are all fairly new, and somehow I don't see them coming out with say a primaris stormraven or stormtalong, or corvus blackstar, so it seems silly to prevent primaris from using them.  As it is it seems like they'd prefer primaris to just use ground transports.

weird how some primaris units are ready for DW considering left shoulder pad, but this new box gives them everything while left pads are molded on...

I sense weird power creep if elims and others are let in DW or GW don´t even understand their own armies anymore.

Yeah there are no real clear reasons for certain profiles being restricted, it's just really weird and they could have addressed it with the latest update but they didn't which is really lame.

Unless I’m missing something, Deathwatch also can’t take Cataphractii and Tartaros terminators, so this problem extends to units that existed before the Primaris line. Again though, I may be wrong, so if someone corrects me I’ll happily consider using my Cataphractii and Tartaros units for my Deathwatch army instead of my Blood Angels and Dark Angels 30k lists.

I think that´s because there´s no DW pads for those units, but i could be wrong about that.

Yeah, this is where I wish Forge World would put some out but I highly doubt it would make financial sense for them, especially since they’ve slimmed down the legion shoulder pads for 30k.

We are fortunate however in that our firstborn are actually really solid ruleswise. I don’t see our vets getting outdated anytime soon. From looking at the mission packs I can see our desthwatch units doing really, REALLY well. We have high killing power and durability all in one. I think unit composition will have to be ironed out later but I throughly expect to run at least 1-2 vet units, especially with only needing one battalion to eat the CP we need.

if I had to guess, assault intercessors will just become a wargear option for us, maybe have eliminators and the like become another alternate option.
