True LOS, or not?

I’m still learning the 9th edition rules, haven’t had time to really read through from A-Z.

 

I’m wondering, is LOS a universal requirement for shooting, or not? There are different terrain rules, for example, and it sounds like for obscuring terrain you can hide behind it and not be targetable even if you’re visible, but if you’re in the terrain, you’re targetable even if you’re not visible/no LOS.

 

Is this correct? Is LOS really not a universal requirement any more for shooting? Not discussing weapons that can indirect fire, so let’s leave them out.

That’s what makes the terrain rule not make sense.

I have always preferred using the width of the base to draw a line with a laser pointer to determine arc and the width of the base for height to determine vertical cover. It’s a nice house rule because scenic bases and modeling decisions shouldn’t influence LoS, I’m really surprised they kept this.

Yes, you still have to be able to see the enemy in order to shoot them. Obscuring just makes it so that feature artificially blocks LOS to anything on the other side of it (Titanic, 18W models excepted). Even if the enemy is in Obscuring ruins, you still have to be able to see them to target them.

It is basically ITC "1st floor blocks LoS" but given a concrete rule within the game itself but instead of just the first floor it is instead the whole terrain piece, but it does need to be 5" tall to qualify for this trait (however within your play group, feel free to waive this if you feel it is reasonable...I'm just a fellow frater not a cop :D )
