Maybe? Do you think this could be pulled of by using normal paints, not contrast?

They're quite expensive...

 

I do! He's mostly washing/glazing here. The contrast medium has an interesting flow but i don't see why you couldn't use the same colors and thin things in a similar way. It may take more coats and time but i'd encourage you to experiment if you like the effect!
