Starting GK in 2020

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Contrary to the title, i am not a new player, but i was away from play throughout a long time.

Now with 9th edition, i'm interested in coming back, but i am very confused of the new rules.

What Books, a new / old player of GK should gather?

I have 8th ed codex.

i think there is a supplement for psychic?.

points upgrades?

thanks

This is actually a tough one. Since we haven't been told when our 9th edition codex will be out. And by the looks of things, we're going to be very very different, points and stat wise, than we are right now.

It might be a waste of funds getting our current codex + psychic awakening, when it could be replaces in just a handful of months potentially

You've got the 8th edition Codex, so all you need is the Psychic Awakening Ritual of the Damned supplement to go along with it.  Those two books are all that you need for now for the faction.  We'll be getting a 9e codex, but as CC said above, we have no clue as to when.  If you want to start playing now/soon, you'll need the RotD PA book.

Welcome back to the Halls of Titan, brother. Always happy to see more Grey Knights return from their crusades to reinforce our brotherhood.

As per your questions, as Valerian mentioned, you would want a copy of Psychic Awakening. With the points upgrades, assuming this isn't heading to list building territory, while the Paladin Bomb archetype is still around (and even more so if Paladins get 4 wounds), the nature of 9th is prioritising objectives > rolling people like how was done in 8th. Terminators are still better troop option than strike squads, because they only went up 3 points compared to the Strike's something ludicrous like 18% (number in that ball-park). Interceptors are good units because of the nature of 9th. However due to the removal of psychic focus from the Brother-Captain, he isn't a must-take anymore (in fact, I just run Kaldor most of the time with Voldus). Happy to answer any additional questions you may have! :)

Hold on, what do you mean by "removal of psychic focus from the Brother-Captain?"

I think he ment, that with the removal of the Rule so we don't get increasing warpcharges casting smite, the brother captain is no auto include in an GK army. In 9th the HQ slots are very limited and Draigo, Voldus, Librarian, GM-NDK's or a Chaplain are important HQ's.

You also have to spread out much more than in 8th Edition, so your smite ball of death is harder to form or simply smaler.

I did kick out my chaplain out of my list because of limited slots and the new command reroll. But i need him vs for ecample a salamander matchup. Now i have to live with the weakness and play around it.
