Ascanius Posted October 3, 2020 Share Posted October 3, 2020 My uninformed guess would be that, given Dawn of Fire is more closely tied to the Studio's game narratives than ever before, its success is more likely to lead to a new set of novels associated with the storyline in the next phase of the game's releases, or the next edition, depending on timing. I also think it's a good thing that the novel Indomitus isn't part of Dawn of Fire, even though it does explicitly involve ships of Indomitus Crusade Fleet Quintus. As with the links to Chris Wraight's Vaults of Terra and Watchers of the Throne, I appreciate seeing connections between different stories without everything needing to be braided together in a single rope. I'd rather have 9 core books and then, by all means, add tons of novellas, short stories, and audio dramas. They can even do sub-series like they are doing with Primarchs and Characters for HH. I think the core narrative is sketched out for the most part by now, but I wouldn't at all mind an anthology or two to supplement the series. This Crusade lasts well over 100 and spans the entire galaxy. I think most of us agree that the BL HH series got a bit bloated and was a victim of whether it was a “setting” or a “story”. I think a lot of ppl (not all) felt the HH might have been better if there had been a “core series” that tells the key points of the HH story that could be surrounded by other story arcs and side plots that expanded HH as a setting in the timeline. It could be argued that is the approach BL are taking with Indomitus. The nine book series starting with Avenging Son is the “core series” (and may end up as more than one set of nine books, we may get several sets) but arguably ALL other books set during the new “Dark Imperium timeline” are part of the setting and expand this period of the timeline. Izlude Posted October 5, 2020 Share Posted October 5, 2020 Yeah I saw it for 4 bucks. Even though I already own the LE, hard to pass up a 4 dollar buck book. I am maybe about 5 chapters in and really loving it so far. Guy's world building is quite good. I would say Wraight does it best in the New Imperium world but honestly Guy is not that far behind. His Guilliman is very very good, much like Dark Imperium. There is alot of depth to him and this coming from someone who tends to be overly critical how my fav primarch is handled. I am not a void battle person but the first one in chapter 3 or 4 is actually very well done and kept me engaged. Of course my favorite parts so far are seeing the wayTerra is through the eyes of the "common" person. He really captures the feeling of just being some tiny cog in a huge machine...easily replaceable and sort of depressing! The LE copy is quite lavish so glad to have this ebook for a bargain price. Baneblade, for example, was far greater than any model tie in novel had the right to be. And he did far better by the Blood Angels with Dante and Devastation of Baal than Swallow ever has with his silly stuff. But I found Avenging Son kind of 'meh' overall. Among the major threads, I liked the naval action and the Inquisitor sections, but I found the Marine and Administratum parts dull and boring at best. If I was to do a sequential ranking of Haley's 40K work, it would be hard to keep this from bottom or near bottom of my personal list. I’m not nearly as hot on this as others are and I love Guy Haley. And that’s the problem for me as he is my favourite author when specifically he writes of Guilliman’s thinking, his struggles to steer this wonky imperium and connect with it. His dialogue with Guilliman is the best too. It just never happened in this novel, although i always get a kick out of Cawl and Guillimans interactions and that might be my favourite scene in this one. I found the crews of the ships more interesting than the marines... except the Alpha Primaris . Every time I see a piece on the prime I want to know more about him in a bigger storyline. Even their specialist games have been slow on even just communicating news, and print runs have been delayed left and right. I wonder at this point if book two will be one of the usual two Christmas digital pre-releases, to try and reclaim some of that momentum. They ain't gonna do that with the Heresy this time around. I assume Ashes is as well, because afaik that's the whole premise of the Conquests series. It's like Battles, but focussed on the primaris. My understanding is that it takes place so far ahead of basically everything that's been written that it's not even officially acknowledged in codices/sourcebooks, which have variously taken place either during the Indomitus Crusade or a little bit after it. And it doesn't really focus on the Primaris marines much specifically, from what I recall, but could be wrong. Was more about Njal Stormcaller and Magnus. Mark Elstob has been recast in his role as the audio book narrator by John Banks. (Who did Dark Imperium). Wonder if that was due to his Guilliman voice...
