Used to play in 2nd Edition in my teens (Hero Quest and Space Crusade before that) and stopped around the introduction of 3rd. Avoided the hobby like the plague, because of its cost, being aware that my obsessive nature would ruin me. Got my fix mostly via the video games. Fast forward to March 2019. Fiancé and I being on vacation in Vienna, she sees a GW store and is intrigued. Drags me into it flailing, because it looks 'interesting'. We get the demo game and painting session and walk out with a Dark Imperium set... *sigh* Started getting into the new lore, loving that marines now look like marines. Decided to start a Salamanders army, got a glimpse of AdMech - "Oh, shiny! I want this, I 'need' that"...ended up buying 10k+ (in 9th edition points) marines, 3.5k AdMech, a buttload of terrain, Kill Team, Blackstone Fortress, hobby supplies and other bits and bobs spread over time since that fateful day in Vienna. Have managed to paint 1 squad of Intercessors and am in the process of painting a Reiver squad. Turns out relocating, marrying and having a kid kind of eats up ALL of your available free time. Even the lockdown didn't help, because I work in an 'essential' business. Now I keep filling up cabinets with plastic and spending most of my free time with reading and watching youtube about 40k stuff, because the little bursts of that fabled free time I would spent setting up and packing up the hobby area and don't get any painting time in, because the kid likes everything that's on tables which is not his toys. First world problems... Ha! Stomp, stomp. I will boop that snoot! Took quite a bit of willpower to not get the Sisters army set as well. I'm trying to restrict myself to only buy limited (in one way or another) stuff and leave the always restocked stuff until in about 50 years, when I have finished everything I have. gorg_graggel Posted August 24, 2020 Author Share Posted August 24, 2020 Oh man, you've been struck harder than I have.I've started with the smaller, Know No Fear pack, then gradually built up both forces, although nowhere near to your extent.I think both your and my purposes would have been better served, and free time better matched by just picking up a Killteam box set, and call it a day. Alternatively, the current Commander edition box, but who knew about that half a year ago. Huh, I remember reading your thread and I had the impression that you actually did it the way it is supposed to be done, for the most part, finishing stuff, before buying more and more. I am having a hard time not buying into Titanicus and Aeronautica though. Heh ... Necromunda was my nostalgia game (I started with 4th Ed fantasy, 2nd Edition 40k, and Necromunda). Actually, all of the Specialist Games, really ... "You just need a box of minis basically." and all that, but in the end we both just sorta forgot about it and pursued other hobbies. Later looking at it the gang and just-on-one-planet (admittedly I never looked too much into it, so I might be wrong about that) setting just didn't grab me. I also can't get myself into a fantasy setting anymore. WFB never appealed to me due to the rank and file gameplay. Back then a lot of my RPG and video game experiences were some kind of fantasy thing, so it just started to come out of my ears and then the LOTR craze the movies caused kinda sealed it for me.
