9x19 plog: updated with Veteran Assault Ints & Apothecary!

I'm hoping to get your guys' feedback on a Work in Progress Emperor's Champion I'm doing:

Mostly I'd like to hear your thoughs on his "chalice". I took the blood angel's sprue chalice and shaved off the blood drop icons. My thinking is that Black Templar, being at least partially inspired (thematically and aesthetically) by the Knights Templar, who's job among other things was to seek and protect the holy grail, that it seemed reasonable for Black Templar to have a 'grail' association. Now I'm not a 40k lore buff, so I don't know, but is there any connection for Black Templar to chalice/grail iconography? I don't want him to seem to "blood angel-y" but I needed something 'blingy' to make him stand out. If there is a reasonable connection, what might a Black Templar chalice have within it? Blood of Rogal Dorn? Or is "Primarch Blood" once again too "Sanguinius-y"? What else might be in there? Water for baptismal kinda thing?

I think a chalice is fine for a Templar. Templars can venerate holy relics, and the sons of Sanguinus don't have a monopoly on cups.

If you want to set him apart from the Blood Angels, I'd stick with something like water. Another option would be to make it clearly the blood of an enemy, like blue or green blood, and then paint the same color blood on his blade.

* I've split this into its own thread, as it doesn't relate to the broader discussion of the changes moving from 8th to 9th edition. *

While I'm not aware of any particular explicit references to the grail legend within official Black Templar lore, you can of course see certain thematic similarities in our crusading knightly/monastic order.

It's entirely up to you if you wish to incorporate some of those elements into your own crusade. My personal crusade uses a number of kitbashes with Dark Angel models, co-opting certain parts to play to the broader Adeptus Astartes themes of "Angels of Death." It's just a twist which appeals to me.

I imagine a chalice carried by an Emperor's Champion might be a holy relic of the Reclusiam; perhaps it belonged to an imperial saint, or was a ceremonial item belonging to a great Reclusiarch of the crusades' history? Maybe it is a more practical item and is filled with sacred oils and incenses; ones that the chaplains bless the champion with before battle. I agree that blood may be just a little too similar to the Sanquinary boys for my own taste - but it's not outside the realms of possibility - perhaps you can come up with some story/fluff that convinces me!

A blood chalice is fine, sure its quite blood angely but its also a very catholic image which fits our Crusader theme very well and even if you dont like that idea or disagree with it you can just straight up say its a Blood Angel chalice given to your Crusade as a gift for their help to some Blood Angel successor or something, exchange of relics and iconography isnt new and Declates crusade is an example of that and this can be another example of it, like a blood chalice to represent those that died in defense of their brother chapter or the blood spilt in brotherhood or something like that.

Templars are big on fortified wine. Let us not forget the infamous Portus Crusade, declared by Marshal Viermooth to purge the M'Deera sector of heretics.

Legend says that the trigger for the purge was the Imperial governor trying to pass the holy Portus wine from left to right, as opposed to the Ecclesiarchy dictated right to left. The Marshal flew into a rage at hearing this was the custom in the vicinity, executed the governor and swore the crusade oaths there and then.

Black Templars are more based on the Teutonic Knights but have a Hospitlar based emblem along with the Templar name so any pop culture hodge podge of chivalric things can fit with them. The connection between the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail comes from a 19th century conspiracy theory later taken up by Nazis and less infamous new age enthusiasts (writing Indiana Jones didn't take much imagination) but it is based on grail guarding knights in medieval literature (but talking to an actual knight templar about the holy grail would have been as relevant as asking the SAS about the One Ring).

I'd second not making it blood if you want to escape the Blood Angels associations.

Nice.

Or add some burning coals in the chalice and you have a nice brazier.

Trmplars doe bring his light to the corners of the universe. And he can set the chalice down so he can properly fight two handed and still see something in the perpetual hertical gloom.

That's it. Done. This is the winning idea. I knew you guys would come through for me.  I already know how to do it, too.  Did some martian ironcrust in the cup to give the bumpy appearance of coals.  Can't wait to finish him now!

My primaris crusade badge uses a holy grail icon. The lore behind it is that they are on a crusade into the imperium nihilus to make contact with other black templars that were cut off by the great rift. Their mission is to see if any of them survived and if so, to share the knowledge of the new primaris gene seed, represented by the holy grail on their banners. So yes, I definitely think it fits.
