Storm guardians

I have a squad of these guys but I don't think I have run since 4th/5th edition (the triple-flamer configuration). The problem is that they are fragile and don't pack much punch but are not cheap enough for their poor stats to be worthwhile.

 

I am trying to think of a use for them in 9th but the problem is always the same, everything they do can be done better by other units. Cheap Troop tax? Rangers are a bit more durable and much longer ranged. A couple of melta guns? Fire Dragons or even Wraithguard take short-ranged armour busting to a whole new level. Chaff clearance? Dire Avengers or Guardian Defenders can od it without getting so close to the enemy. Want to tie someone up in melee? Banshees get the charge much easier, negate Overwatch and can do a bit of damage when they get there.

 

9th looks like it will be focused on Objectives but I don't see Storm Guardians as being much good as Objective holders as they die to a stiff breeze while being short ranged. Maybe there is a rick I have not considered with these guys but I am struggling to see much value in them.

In 8th a few very successful, competitive Eldar players used them simply as objective grabbers in ITC
 

I believe, considering how cheap they are, that they are a better choice than most troops. I’ve seen a lot of players selling the Dire Avenger / Asurmen combo and I’m not sold yet. 
 

what I’ve very recently been doing is using my troops for scramblers, and it’s working. They’re pretty useless otherwise. If I had the cheaper option of Storm Guardians, that’s what I’d do with them.

I thought that might be the case for them, not much better than objective grabbers. It's definitely a shame, I do like to take things I like the look of but at the same time I do like the units to have a purpose. I feel like even with plenty of re-rolls to hit/wound etc they would still bounce off of most things even guardsmen units

Exactly. And those rerolls and buffs could be used to make some of our other units much more effective rather than trying to boost Guardians to just being adequate.

I think this is essentially true. I'm just being honest by saying my experiences is that the Eldar troops are extremely expendable. Where some armies are intentionally constructed this way, I don't think this is an intentional, (or permanent) design of the Eldar troops. 

 

Again, Asurmen aside , I'm finding that almost any points put into troops are easily lost, and with pending changes this will be even more apparent. However this is why I've reduced troops, but play with Banshees. (I'm also counting on the premise (leak) that the power swords will sting a bit more.)

 

The troops simply have no staying power AND no appreciable offense, but they cost more than a 'disposable' troop you'd see in other armies. So with this army I am currently using very few troop slots.

That's something I've always found counter-intuitive with the Craftworlds, they want to protect the Guardians to keep their civilians protected, so give their "long range" squad rifles with the same effective range as the pistols of other races, and lightly-armoured assault squads. I guess they're protecting them by ensuring they never actually see the battlefield.
