Iron Warriors in 9th - how are you adapting

Just a quick thread to see how you're all doing in 9th so far? My hobby butterfly is working it's way across the forums and heading to the warp.

Does the IW trait, 'ignores benefits of cover' just work on the armour saves? That should work on the defended positions/heavy cover benefit to armour saves in melee, right?

Any new Daemon engines added to the fold now they look like they might be great?

'Ignores benefits of cover' is probably covered in the appendices at the back of the rulebook; there are some common interactions and 'patches' for interactions like this.

With the pending improvements of 2W to Space Marine infantry, I think infantry-based Iron Warriors should get a nice little boost.

That's what I'm hoping for too. I don't often get to play games that are too large and I enjoy painting infantry more than vehicles, so this will hopefully be a nice boon

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/365505-csm-in-9th-ed-what-will-you-use/ In that topic, first post I had analysed early the implications for our legion tactic vs IF trait.

At the moment, not very fussed about a set list build. Just grinding through my IW painting backlog. Problem is, as the CSM part is shrinking, the HH part is growing. I think I'm winning/ making progress? *confused iron noises*

Honestly I haven't had the chance to get into 9th. But I am hoping to remake my company with the updated models so there is more cohesion as opposed to 15ish years of collecting them on a table each time. I think I'm going to go with a fairly decent sized infantry cohort with plenty of supporting daemon engines.

This is a project that I have also started last year. I Sold all undersized infantry models and am now rebuilding that part of the army.

For my gaming group's next project, I need to start a crusade force. I am thinking about a Chaos Lord, two squads of five CSM with equipment, an Obliterators and a Helbrute for the start. Any other suggestions?

Rapier batteries

With the FW options I want to wait until they have their update for 9th edition from GW.

Depends, IW can be extremely fluffy on what they compose their army of. Tanks, daemon engines, massed infantry. All kinda depends on what you want to depict on the battlefield.

Well, I am leaning towards a mixture of daemon engines/walkers and Marines as the core of my IW for this campaign. With the buffs to the former and announced improvements to the latter, this should work well enough. Edited by Kythnos

@Kythnos - Sounds like a solid enough force for the table. That could easily be some sort of a 'Forlorn Hope" assault force. Daemon engines supporting an infantry push through the ruined mess of a wall that the tanks couldn't get through...yeah I could totally see that.

Yes, that's roughly the image I have in mind. How fitting that the Battlesmith who will lead the campaign force at the beginning is a follower of Khorne ;-)

Although I've played Iron Warriors for a while, it's mostly been at smaller point games so for me I think it's hard to say at this point. My group is building up to larger points, so I'm at least doing a lot of theoretical list building. We know our stratagems favour vehicles, daemon engines, havocs and Cult of Destruction units, so I would lean towards those for us - maybe taking basic troop loadouts and then stacking whichever we buff with Warlord traits. Of them, I think Vindicators look good for their high Toughness and our strat to re-roll the number of hits. Pairing one of them with a unit of Havocs and maybe a Las-Predator for anti-tank could deal with a lot of threats and synergise well with our Warlord traits.

I've tried rolling a Defiler as a distraction unit, and it kind of works - but the problem is that the list needs other heavy hitters to capitalize on the distraction. The games that I've played haven't been big enough to fit them in and in retrospect I loaded it out wrong if it was a distraction, so it's been a bit of a challenge to experiment with.

We know we're getting a new codex with big changes to our unit profiles in the W bump, and seeing how the points shake out will mix that up a lot. But if Havocs stay at T5 and go to 2W that is a nice plus, or rolling 10 man squads with 2 heavy weapons and the warlord trait to ignore movement penalties could be nice.

One strategy I want to try is having a mostly basic detachment with Havoc backup, with a second detachment rolling two Vindicators and a Las-Predator with a Warpsmith and Dark Apostle. The Dark Apostle can make them -1 to be hit, Warpsmith and our strats heal them, we have strats to re-roll wounds on 1, and using the strats to reduce AP and gain a FNP is great for vehicles. Vindicators also benefit for the re-roll to number of shots, although it's limited to just one sadly. I feel like this could survive a lot while pushing out a lot of punishment

Another interesting strategy could be rolling a Terminator Lord and a fair number of Elites, with a second detachment of a Dark Apostle and Oblits and Daemon Engines. Give the Warlord the extra hits stratagem on Cult of Destruction and Demon Engines and move them within the Dark Apostles prayer for -1 to be hit by incoming fire (alternatively, make them Mark of Tzeentch and try to boost their invuln with a Tzeentch Sorcerer). The Terminators can deal with light infantry and maybe heavier infantry depending on their loadout, while the Daemon Engines rip through things at range. Then, when needed, just drop in the Oblits in range of re-rolls and the Warlord Trait, and use Endless Cacophony to blow anything away. It should be tanky and would pack quite a punch.

I'm not sure how we'll these ideas would handle objective secured though, depending on the points value of the game in the end.

I'm predicting overall points increases for CSM with our new dex, then we wait a year for points cuts via a CA. Havoc's have already gone back to the shelf for me with the loss of dev battery specialist detachment. Also I see little value for us grabbing any other detachment outside of a patrol or LOW type detachment, if any. The battalion has all the slots we need for a variety of different builds for IW's. Bat + patrol is 5 HS slots for 2 CP, and we should be using 4 troop slots anyway for 9th in general, so patrol detachment would be the most efficient choice as a second detachment if you won't be using any LOW unit types and need extra slots of what the battalion gives.
