How do you paint Amber?

Hello Fraters,

I am currently thinking of recreating a Space Marine Chapter from an awesome FanFic, but I cannot get the colour right. The should have a vibrant amber color, but until now, I only got the following:

20200907 212244

20200907 212308

Can anyone of you help me to find/create a vibrant amber?

For the first one I used Wraithbone, Gryph-Hound Orange and then Fire Dragon Bright. The second one was Grey Seer and Nazdreg Yellow.

The first one is more orange, and the other one is to haphazard (?)  if I use more Nazdreg Yellow as it might pool somewhere unnecessary. I also thought about adding some Seraphim Sepia on the second one, but before I throw anymore color on them without a real plan, I thought I would ask you about it.

Any tips or examples how you paint amber? It does not have to be contrast paints, but I just wanted to try them, as I could not get the right color with the usual paints.

Oh, and the FanFic I was talking about is this one:

Thank you all in advance.

If you are talking amber more like a gemstone (instead of just a honey yellow-brown with a hint of orange), I had the following blog post saved that recommends the following layer progression:

1. Rhinox Hide (Base)

2. Agrax Earthshade (Shade)

3. Skrag Brown (Layer)

4. Trollslayer Orange (Layer)

5. Yriel Yellow (Layer)

6. Flash Gitz Yellow (Layer)

7. Dorn Yellow (Edge)

8. Whitescar (Layer)

9. Lamenters Yellow (Glaze)

10. ‘Ardcoat (Technical)

Now, you likely aren't going to need the 'Ardcoat, but it really would add to the gem effect, obviously. For a Marine's armor, I'd probably try and paint that layer progression as NMM.

Hats off to you for picking what is probably one of the harder colors/effects to do, IMO - I know I've never felt like I can pull off convincing amber.

Thank you Bryan Blaire.
This is a great method for gemstones, and I will probably try it out on some jewels, but I don't think this would look good on Power Armor.
After the first few tries, I realized how hard it is to paint amber on larger flat areas.
Maybe the color on the second one would look better if the whole modell is finished and i paint the textil black/grey?

Honestly, the second one looks more like an Imperial Fist "golden yellow" to me, so I'm not sure whether it really fits the amber name, personally.

Have you looked to see about any actual amber paint colors? I know there's an "amber gold" by Reaper Miniatures that's an almost golden brown kind of color.

Amber's one of those difficult colors that it's hard to say what it really is if you aren't actually looking at the substance. If the second color with black fatigues would look good to you, then I say go for it! You are the person to please with those miniatures.
