Question on Titan Victory Banners

What is the meaning of the symbols on Titan banners in regards to lore? Each legions' banners have small variations, but the most common symbols are chessboards with chess pieces spread throughout. What do they mean?

Those are similar to various historical kill markings, especially considering 40k battles include true centerpieces like command Leviathans or large titans. Using chess pieces to indicate you killed the enemy commander (king) or such is pretty intuitive.

For titans the standard marks are crossed axes for Warlords, single axe for Reavers, jaws for Warhounds and a crossbow for Warbringers. If your legio only counts the biggest kills, you could use kings for Senioris, queens for heavy battle titans, knights and bishops for lighter battle titans and pawns for scout kills etc.
