Adding Wear and Tear to Heresy Era Chainswords

So I'm in the process of putting the finishing touches on my Heresy-Era Blood Angels Assault Marines and have hit a wall with finding a good way to add wear and tear to the flat black chainswords. How are some ways you've made your Heresy era chainswords look like they've survived the battlefields of the Heresy? Thanks!

speckled light drybrush of leadbelcher along the teeth, maybe occasional streaks across the flat in between. It quite rapidly creates the impression of significant wear, paint peeling, abrasions, etc. Just go back and forth swiftly and lightly across from teeth to teeth so tha the abrasion marks look like what you'd expect from going *through* something

How worn do you want? Chainswords are known to throw teeth, so you could cut a few out here and there. Otherwise, linear leadbelcher lines in the direction of chopping, brighter, fresh streaks of stormhost silver, sponge on doombull brown then leadbelcher over the top, blood for the blood god, typhus corrosion in the teeth, nuln oil washes around the exhausts.

Any traditional weathering will work. Naturally if they're BA, then you should paint some frescoes down the sides of the blades, I'm thinking Leonardo's last supper, then apply the above weathering over the top :happy.:

EDIT:

In addendum, if you want something more than flat black to weather, painting hazard stripes on the chainswords looks particularly good with Blood Angels, and gives a 'factory fresh' vibe, you might like that in a siege themed force. The yellow is also great to weather, and things like typhus corrosion really show up well on the yellow.

You can see that in some of my BA basing here:

Would be happy to offer some advice, but can you post a pic of your chainswords as they are now?

Sure, here's a sample of my chainswords. The black is Army Painter Matt Black and the metal is Army Painter Gun Metal washed with Army Painter Dark Tone with another highlight with Gun Metal again. I'm happy with the metal parts of my chainswords but the black needs more flavor. I have 30 assault marines I'm working on, so something quick and dirty would be better since I have quite a few to paint.

You can also look at how chainsaws wear.

Kinda gives you an idea of the wear pattern of how paint chips. This is fun when I go to work on something like a crane or tractor or tank, finding pictures of real, worn equipment is oddly satisfying

Not going to lie, I saw these images and immediately thought about the original Doom and Doom 2 games. It made for a good laugh. Thank you for passing them along!

Hi Cris,

I'm very sorry for taking so long to reply. My suggestion would be as follows:

1. Sponge chipping with your metallic of choice. A chunk of kitchen sponge held with pliers works best in my experience. You coulld do a light wash over it to make it look grungier.

2. Add some blood splatter effects if you like.

If you are interested in tutorials, I got you covered. Feel free to ask me questions if anything is unclear, and have fun!
