Greetings, all!

I'm a long-time 40K lurker who has played a good deal of WFB and WAB (no AoS as of yet). My son and I are both building our starting 40K armies together, and he's already finished an entire unit of Poxwalkers while I'm still clipping Wytches from the sprue! Youth is wasted on the young.

I need to ask the community's guidance...I'm not really sure where on this forum to ask n00b questions regarding rules and how to build an army. My son and I have the Core 40K rules and the Codexes (Deathguard for him, Drukhari for me), but I'm still puzzled on the faction unit restrictions. We each have acquired several basic units already, but until we know what we're doing, we aren't sure what to buy next.

Thanks in advance and especially to Brother Tyler!

Welcome! As said above, you should definitely be able to ask around in the Death Guard and Drukhari subforums about how rules work. You should be able to start a new thread there, maybe one on advice getting started. I know someone did something similar in the Sisters of Battle subforum recently and it's a great topic.

Welcome to the forums, I have to say you've chosen polar opposite armies, from which I expect really intense match ups - the fast, glass poisoned knives of the Drukhari against the Slow, indomitable, also poisoned sledgehammer of the Death Guard.

Generally speaking, everything in the same codex is the same faction and won't affect your army building or command points and stuff. It's only when you want to mix and match units from across the codexes that it becomes an issue - like if your son wanted a Black Legion Sorcerer or Master of Possessions to supplement his Death Guard.

The real minimum you need to play is a patrol detachment, so your favourite HQ choice model and your favourite troop. After that, get the models that you think are the coolest, or will cover strategic weaknessed after you get a game or few in.

Most armies will probably use a patrol detachment for most games, so you should have a goal of getting 2 HQ and 3 troop units tabletop ready, then whatever else you feel like.

Drukhari are quite a specialist army and dont work in the normal way, so you'll have to go to the =Dark Eldar= section of the forum to get the best advice from the specialists.
