Stormboyz in 9th?

Continuing topics I am interested in. How are large numbers of Stormboyz? I was considering the named Goff dude and two large mobs of them plus my big Skarboyz(depending on opponent)  and Ghaz. I think it would be effective. But I am wondering about 4 smaller mobs or a big mob and two small mobs. Not sure.

I still have other boyz and a squad of gretchin in the back field last time I checked my theory crafting list, but the Skarboyz, Ghaz and at least one big mob of stormies are the main thrust of the list.

Oh, Zagstruk is a Goff is he? Shame, I think Stormboyz fit Blood Axes well. It just goes to show that we need a generic Stormboy boss. As for tips on how to use them, I would have to defer to the wisdom of others. I have a unit of ten and another larger unit waiting on the sprues but I haven't had a game with my Orks for several editions.

According to battescribe he is. I havent checked the book, I was bringing Goffs anyway. But yes I agree that stormboyz at least in their original incarnation would fit better as Blood Axes than anything else.

Blood axes do use a lot of stormboyz due to their unorky nature of polishing and marching means they fit in tmwith the sneaky boyz. But zaggy is a goff unfortunately

Goffs are the only proppa Orks, there's nothing unfortunate about him being a Goff.

I have 60 storm boys but as far as 9th goes the thing that I am unsure of it how such a large mob even works with unit coherency and how that works with close combat. Haven't played 9th yet but it sticks out to me that it could be an issue, having more models than can fight or having them drop off except maybe they wouldn't with Zag. ? Not sure if unit coherency checks are part of moral or a separate thing.

Gee a mob of 60 ! >.< I’d say with 9th Ed and engagement range etc... I’m thinking medium sized mobs (large for other armies) or your 2 smaller and one large may be the most economical for attacks and survival and with trying to cram them all in on smaller boards could be problematic, I think good use of terrain cover etc will see you getting into close combat more effectively than you did in 8th Ed... I’d still love to see a huge mob of storm boys on the table though :-)

Stormboyz are pricey Ork boyz who lose out on ObSec and an attack for having native Deep Strike and being just fast as hell. There's a lot of value in the native deep strike in 9th, because you can bring small units onto the table to achieve objectives, but kommandos are cheaper for this role.

So it's really about being a faster Ork boy. They don't get the attack for being 20+, but this is a small blessing; you don't have to feel compelled to run large mobs. I mean, I would gladly take the extra attack, but you take what you get. So using that speed is the key. Either you get a quicker charge (including from Deep Strike), or you're able to protect the mob by hading it more and utilizing the speed to jump out onto something.

The cost is a big detriment, as is the lack of ObSec in 9th. They are no more durable than a boy, so each casualty is more expensive. Its because of this that we have to be more canny with Stormboyz, using their speed to protect them and put them in positions where they can excel, and not just use their bodies to bully the board like we do with Boyz.

As for Zagstruk, I used him pre-codex to keep three 10-ork mobs of Stormboyz on the table. I think this is exactly how to use him now; smaller Stormboyz are easier to hide, and he can aid units with his meaty legs. His downside is that he takes an HQ slot, which have become very valuable to Orks in 9th. I don't think he is worth the slot, unless you've somehow got an empty one.

I have been thinking about this, if you were to take a outrider detachment you could build it from Zagstruck and MSU Stormboys. Throw in the 'Flyboys' Specialist mob and you increase there durability... maybe even throw in some jets or bombers in support, probably worth the 3cp.

Note, due to the wording of the Specialist Mob rules even named characters can get there bonuses, i think...
