WarriorFish paints... an Ultramarine

I'm starting a small "inter-project" project to enforce a pause on all deadlines, armies, etc - sort of a hobby pit stop. It will feature one off models where I paint something different, try out new techniques and pay tribute to armies I like. First off are the Ultramarines, I grabbed some bits and short of final clean up and maybe an addition to the base he's ready for priming:

I have a decent number of blues, and this will be my first time doing proper codex bits (my DIY chapter follows the codex aside from the visual parts, where they only use the white helmets for veterans). What company should I do? Anyone got recipes to share?

I'm aiming for basic troops and the like, so that rules out the 1st Company and 10th but that leaves another eight companies to choose from. I'll need to decide the squad too now I think about it. Maybe I should create a poll :tongue.:

I'm thinking about a more modern, darker blue compared to the old school brighter. I have Caledor Sky and Lothern Blue which should probably cover me, along with some washes?

Probably little or none here, let him stand proud as a son of Guilliman! I have more concrete weathering plans for another chapter

As I've been playing with snow for my nid bases I may do that here, something a little bit different to the norm but no rush to decide on the basing yet. I'd be happy to take ideas and recommendations of course as with anything :smile.:

Things got off to a bad start with the blue... a bit of repainting later (and a bit of mixing for the colour) got something I'm happier with:

Needs to get to the other colours to start offsetting the blue but so far so good. I'll have to decide the company soon as an Ultramarine without the trim painted looks odd :tongue.: Oh yes and a Genestealer skull to spice the base up - seemed appropriate for Ultras! Since Macragge is a mountainous world I think I'll go with a heavy snow base too.

Plan is to get a bit more done tomorrow, so if all goes well I hope to finish him soon

I was enjoying things so I pushed on to finish, with the snow freshly applied:

I opted for fourth company for something a little different, and I had greens to hand :tongue.: Always have fun with red lenses as the reds always seem so similar, I may return to him for a little bit more on codex markings but my pokings online didn't reveal much useful and I don't have my SM codices to hand.

Until then, on to the next chapter! :D

Yes, there will be a few more Space Marines of different colours to come :smile.:

With the sun shining brightly (alas, not hobby time) I took the opportunity for a quick daylight picture set:

Lets you see the highlights a bit better though I spy a leg that got hit by a brush... :tongue.: The Tyranid skull is Behemoth of course, to make sure they know who is boss :laugh.:

No laurels here, just a standard trooper :P The green was simple enough - Castellan Green with a Loren Green highlight, and given a bit of a green wash to finish. I think it's easy to get the "wrong" green, especially on a blue, so this turned out well considering.

For the next models in the series I'll do a bit more colour planning in advance, make sure I don't rely on chance (or need to repaint anything...) :)

I have some white approaches to test, but I'm also looking at painting red and black so it'll be one of these three colours :smile.:

edit: got the next one ready - White Scars! Felt appropriate to be a biker too, if anyone is interested generally in my mediocre forays in other chapters then checking the WarriorFish paints... tag will be the way to go
