What to do with 16 excess Cataphractii ... ( mad musings)

Recommended Posts

So, as it is stands I have like 15 or 16 unused Cataphractii, including one of the characters from BaC, and have absolutely no clue where to go with them from here ...

I don't need more terminators for my XXth Legion, so the thought occurred to ... just dip into another, second Legion with them. Oh, the madness !

Not settled onto anything at this point ... (or if I even want to start another Legion) ...

Dark Angels:  I'm not really into the Deathwing that much I fear. If I played DA I'd go for Destroyers most likely, so no DA for me.

Emperor's Children:  Tempting, I adore the models of the Phoenix Terminators and would prolly run them as Tartaros with different weapon. So, no room there for my Cataphractii.

Iron Warriors:  Actually, not a bad idea.  I kinda dig the idea of a Golg conversion leading some Cataphractii into battle.

White Scars:  Really like the Praetor in Cataphractii Armour model they got, but somehow Cataphractii just don't feel very 'Scar-y' to me. But I like the Legion a lot.

Space Wolves:  Nah, not my style.

Imperial Fists:  Love 'em. Cataphractii fit in well with Legion themes and rules. And I am seriously considering just getting Dorn and going from there since he unlocks terminators as troops.

Night Lords:  The buddy I play with the most is an avid NL player, so nope, don't wanna copy-cat.

Blood Angels:   Like the Legion and their fluff profoundly, but I don't see their rules / rites / characters synergizing too well with a load of Cataphractii.

Iron Hands:  Like the Legion, but would prolly go for Gorgons if I started playing them, so nope I guess.

World Eaters:  Same as Iron Hands, would go for Red Butchers and not regular Cataphractii.

Ultramarines:  Huge blob of Fulmentarus ? Very tempting. But alas they can't be troops and I'd need lots of regular Legionnaires to accompany them.

Death Guard:  HQ: Deathshroud & Legion Herald. Troops: 2 units of Cataphractii (running PotL). Then spice up with some Grave Wardens. Sounds not so bad to me.

Thousand Sons:  Yeah, totally no need for Legion Terminators in this Legion when you can field Sekhmet. A sad truth.

Sons of Horus / Luna Wolves:  Not really into SoH. But Luna Wolves (with Loken and 'Orphans' maybe) could be an idea.

Word Bearers:  PotL with Kor Phaeron sounds cute, even if he is a crap character.

Salamanders:  See TS but with regard to Fire Drakes. *sigh*

Raven Guard:  Not on the menu, since I play Alpha Legion already and also feel Tartaros would go better with this Legion.

So, it somehow boils down to Iron Warriors, Imperial Fists, Blood Angels, Death Guard ... maybe Luna Wolves, Ultramarines or Word Bearers.

Open to suggestions and neat ideas !

Is there such a thing as "excess" Cataphractii??? :)

Iron Warriors. The BaC Praetor is spot on for Golg but can convert easily enough if you want. Also, if you source some cyclone missile launchers and magnets you can double your terminators as Tyrant Siege Terminators.

Plus Iron Warriors can be very easy and satisfying to paint.

It is exactly what I did with my "extras."

Nullificators are a favourite of mine. Took 5 to a recent event and they were really quite good! Saw off a massive assault squad and then flamed the hell out of some stuff.

They were a great unit. Always want more!

Golg leading a contingent of iron warrior cataphractii and siege tyrants sounds awesome especially if you’re interested in doing an orbital assault list, however if you are interested in/your group uses the mournival events fan supplements an iron hands all terminator list representing clan avernii on Istvaan V is something I’m looking at doing myself. Between heavy destroyers, standard legion terminators, gorgons and the new legion veteran terminators to represent morlocks there’s a surprising amount of variety you can get out of an all terminator list. Of course heavy destroyers are available to everyone bar sallies but the veteran terminators are only for the Iron Warriors, Raven Guard, Night Lords, Iron Hands and Imperial Fists so it’s something to factor in if you use those rules.

As somebody who runs an all terminator DG army I can attest to the fun that can be had. Grave Wardens and Deathshroud are top units as well, add a few dreadnoughts (seven in my case) and a few vehicles and you are good to go. Warning though it can get very points expensive!
