Lokhust Heavy Destroyers

I'm trying to determine if I want to add more than just the 1 Heavy Destroyer I have to my army or not. Trying to figure out if they are a viable option.

- Max squad of 3, so there's a slight chance they could revive with Reanimation Protocols...

- Living Metal is always nice

- Fly keyword is great, plus ignoring the Heavy modifier

- Can reroll 1's to hit(? or was it to wound?), access to Extermination Protocols, and can benefit from other reroll aura from Destroyer Lords

- 3D3 shots from the anti-infantry gun isn't too bad, if going against non-marine infantry

- and the 3D3 damage laser is a nice bit of damage from the anti-tank gun

But...

- no invul

- only 1 shot from the anti-tank laser

- Str 7 AP-1 D1 from the infantry gun with random number of shots is ehhh (but it being Blast is nice)

- Destroyers would do better at mulching infantry, while Doomsday/Doomstalkers are better anti-tank

I feel like these guys are the in-between unit compared to others. Can do good at one role or the other, but there's other things that are better...

Am I missing something here? Some amazing build or strat that I'm just not seeing to make these guys better?

Not really. Destroyers in general are just not quite there. But for the heavy destroyer, including one in a normal destroyer unit actually has some merit. The extra wound lets you tank damage 3 shots which can reduce enemy shooting efficiency much easier and also killing him when you know your about to lose a couple destroyers improves your chances of bringing a model back from reanimation.

I actually think survivability is the only issue. Yes, the Gauss Destructor is only one shot, but for the cost of a Doomstalker you get two. Those two shots average more damage than the d6 shots of the Doomstalker, especially if it moves. So if you could keep them alive, they'd be amazing in a unit of three. But the best we can do is put them in Strategic Reserves and get one turn of shooting out of them.

The S7 gun does almost no damage against things our normal guns can't handle. The big cannon is much better. For high output mid strength shooting Tomb Blades are superior.

The big gauss is very potent and I've had 2 games with one buried in a 5 destroyer squad. Both times they came on the side from strategic and put out a lot of hurt. It is only 1 shot but rerolling 1s and having 1 CP to auto wound something major puts pinpoint damage on. Ive been toying with the idea of taking 3, especially with the Deciever to put them in strategic to hide. Sunday I have another game where is am running 1 in a 3man unit and having target saturation.

Defense is a bit of an issue but using strategic, hiding one in a normal squad or presenting a lot of targets can mitigate it.
