Flesh Tearers 5th Company - a firstborn truescale project

I've always been a fan of the 'firstborn' marines rather than Cawls creations. The look of a marine with a mk. VII helmet and Godwyn pattern bolter has always been the mental image that pops to mind whenever someone mentions Space Marines.


Having bought and had fun with an Elegoo Mars Pro 3D printer over the last month, I've decided to start a small project based on truescaling firstborn marines by doing some simple editing of the huge amount 40k STL files on websites such as cults3d and thingiverse, rather than the more traditional kitbashing/modelling I've tried previously. The benefit is having closer control over size and proportions of each model.


I've chosen the Flesh Tearers simply because I love the colour scheme; that dark red and black look is brutal. There also appear to be quite a good amount of Blood Angel styled STL files online that will allow me to print some nice looking models and parts in the future.

The first step is the simplest, find the stl models and change the scale to my liking and add supports. I'm still relatively a novice to 3D printing, so if anyone is alarmed by the seemingly excessive positioning of my supports that is why :sweat:

After some post processing the printed parts sit in a UV curing station for a few minutes.

A completed test model. Pretty happy with the scale although he may actually be a little too big, although not exceeding plausible lore proportions, as some firstborn marines are simply bigger than others.

The only part of the Flesh Tearer that has not been 3D printed is the helmet, which is just a normal GW tactical marine mk. VII helmet. I also had to print some primaris arms as I could not find a model for the old school arms anywhere.

 

Next up... reinforcements.

That actually looks amazing, good work.

 

As you're 3d printing over injection moulding, you could actually clean up some of the tubes on the ankles and knees which were only there to remove overhangs/voids, etc which couldnt be produced using injection moulds - that's why all original 3rd ed multiparts had purity seals and such that woud drag in the dirt. These were largely removed with the resculpt in ~2014, but the pipes to cover up the ankle armour void remain.

excellent work - we need more truescaling going on, and this is a novel process to produce Marines for it, which actually well .. replicates the intricacies of the armour marks in question. 

Also great to see a bolter in his hands look a bit more like an SMG or slightly outsized machine-pistol - bravo. Paint-work's decent as well. 

I also like the attention to detail in the various torsos and legs you've done - no two are alike, and it's clear to see what they're derived from, both in terms of the Mk.VI and also the chest aquila and abdominal armour on the other ones. 

although  good *grief* the amount of 'sprue' that appears to turn up doing things thataway - I saw the legs, and initially thought you'd done some sort of 3d printed display base style thing of a librarian walking upon up-flowing blood or something. Good that it came away easy.

Looks great! What were your print settings?

 

Reiver boltgun arms are the Mk 7 style but big enough to work on Primaris sized marines.

 

Also have you considered dropping the shoulders very slightly?

Thanks. The settings I have at the moment are 0.05mm layer height, 10s exposure time, 8 bottom layers and 65s exposure. I could probably alter them a little.

 

Thats a good point on the reiver arms, I will have to dig through my pile of shame try them out.

 

I think the shoulder on the right arm does actually need dropping slightly.

Finished the first squad. Bought some transfers off eBay, so I've designated this collection the 5th Company (with the black blood drop). This squad has been marked as the second squad.

Next up, more squads, but I'm tentatively working on truescaling terminators and Gabriel Seth.
