Thinking of starting... where to begin?

Hey guys!

I'm thinking of collecting and painting up some nids to play with, since I can't take the heartbreak of losing with my GK all the time.

I'm also sick of painting gold and silver, so I thought nids were the complete opposite of marines and silver and gold.

And I thought, they're bugs, so I wont get too attached to characters and what not.

Anyway,

I like the idea of hordes of the baby nids with the bigs ones sprinkled in amongst them.

What are the models and general boxes I need to get for this to happen?

I've been looking at the nid range on GW site, but unsure what exactly I need to field something.

I know termagaunts, genestealers and warriors...

Tyranids are very different from most armies I enjoy not having to paint any metallic or trims :biggrin.: They're also great for Contrast paints, as well as experimenting with techniques and approaches that maybe aren't so useful elsewhere. If you're not sure where to start playing around with some lists to see what can be done is a good start, Battlescribe is great for this. In short you can play nids in a few ways, though this is broadly speaking how you fill your Troop choices. You can go in for gribbly hordes, Warriors for a more mid-tier approach, Genestealers for some attacking power - or of course a mix.

As with anything, the box sets are the best places to start as saving money is never a bad thing so maybe seeing what you can do with the options is a good starting point? I don't think you can look at nids as a particularly strong army currently, you should always look to models and lore first anyway but be aware that it's not going to be a huge difference compared to your GK currently.

Are there any particular approaches you'd like to take? If you sort your core in Troops and a few HQ options it's easier to add the rest. For example I knew I wanted all Troop choices, in particular a decent number of Warriors which sorted the majority of lists. From there I could add Carnifexes and the like

Have you thought about what colours or schemes you might like to try for your nids? Their organic nature provides more options than not I think, for me a few ideas I wanted to include came together without much effort for it :smile.:

Yeah I've been using army painter on Dawn of War II to test some schemes for the nids.

I think they are hugely different, and not being human I don't feel personally connected to them. Which is good. I'm not fussed that they aren't top tier, as my gaming group already play all the top tier meta armies at the moment, and I don't want to jump on that bandwagon, no one plays nids in my group. So I wanted to be different.

I'm thinking I want a rainforest type of look, I'm currently trying to think of basing ideas as well, I want them in a jungle, I'm thinking greens for the shells of the nids, a colour I rarely use on my GK.

I'm thinking a chameleon type of bug, that blends into the forest until it strikes

Considering joining the swarm myself - the new Battleforce looks like a great deal. Tactical Tortoise has been playing a lot of 'nids on TTS and has a great video up about them. I also really recommend u/Stormcoil's posts on Reddit, he has a great post on Tyranid tactics overall as well as some great batreps with pictures to explain how he uses his army.

Me too :)

I want to try a second army I don't feel as compelled to be competitive with (I'll try but definitely more a beer pretzel project). I'm with you those BattleForce boxes look good. I'm looking to see if an online store I have Credit with can grab me two. Not sure what I'll go with the Gargoyles. Two is at least one unit too many of those things for me. The model doesn't excite me the same at the Genestealers and Warriors do.

I think Hive Fleet Kraken is pretty cool I always like desert colors and the red contrast nicely compared to my Warhawks.

The new battle box that is coming out is a good starting point.

Right now Genestealer are in a very good position, with a swarmlord they can cross the distance quite nicely. Or a broodlord can buff them.

I think a start collecting box could be a good addition to the Xmas box. Gets you another 8 genestealers , a broodlord and a trygon/ mawloc kit.( Carnifexes aren’t a bad buy either. )

Ofcourse we know there will be a new codex at some point so what’s hot now could change :)

I was looking at the start collecting box, there wasn't many models. 8 genestealers and 2 characters right? 10 models does that seem worth it? I assume the genestealers are your troops in units of 4? And unfortunately that stock isn't available in Australia right now, or so the GW site is telling me..

Yea, 8 is from the ~2000's Xenos sculpt days where they seemed to only be able to fit 4 models to a frame - That's why things like Guardians, Necron Warriors, Termagants etc were sold in multiples of 4.

Not sure if playing Nids wont help with that - you'll have more fun, though.

I get this too. Games with marines and Eldar are stressful as I don't want models to die. As long as you can get into that 'who cares' mindset, you'll have great fun. Play to the missions, throw your characters into combat. You can always spawn more.

Also, great to see more biomass for the Hive Fleets! Nids are super easy and fun to paint with contrasts, I'd suggest getting the box of 5 gaunts for ~£6 or so and testing out some schemes.

Yes, compare the gaps in the older sprues to more modern ones and there's a big difference. Flailing arm logistics aside the Genestealers are still pretty good models though :smile.: I think it was the 4th Ed nids codex intro that equated losing models to expending ammunition :tongue.: Just as well, as the gaunts will die in droves... If you're after a different style to Marines Tyranids will do this better than most - from building to painting to playing :smile.:

The advantage of starting out means more return on the box sets, and given we've heard rumour of a decent number on the latest addition to come this is a good time to start  While I don't think we'll see a new nid codex in the short term this gives you time to get models ready for the table top and new codex

I recommend grabbing some cheap nids to paint up too, as well as do some research on your theme idea to get some ideas from nature. The colours I wanted to use fell into place naturally once I got the inspiration I needed after wandering through various insect, frog and other weird and wonderful critter pictures :smile.: Don't forget to keep us updated on your progress!

Having just read that Stormcoil post, it's a good read, but don't take it to heart unless you're going super-competitive, particularly the list building.

The discussion has some really good considerations on what to do going second, dealing with screens/infiltrators, etc, that will make anyone a better player, though.

Yeah Ive got some colour schemes I'm thinking of, as well as basing themes as well, sort of, I haven't put paint to plastic yet, so I don't know what the final colour scheme will be, but I've got some idea.

Well, all the T5 meta armies are taken, and I cant be bothered to build the space wolves I have sitting there and the wonderful thunder cav, only to have them die.

I was also thinking word bearers chaos marines, but I don't want to paint armour like that anymore. I wont something completely different, something I cant get attached to, but something cool to make and unique. The more I browse the model range, the more colourful ideas I have.

On a side note, it's super hard to tell what each weapon is, I have no idea what I'm staring at when I look at their weapons. Thankfully my group doesn't play wysiwyg as we're forever changing weapons on lists and such.

I’ve pretty much noticed even most competitive players couldn’t tell you what half the Xenos weapons look like. As long as they are consistent and I have a list to refer to I’ve never held my opponents feet to the flame. That might be unfair to Imperial and Hereticus players but I don’t have time to memorize what each each xenos gun did. Especially Nids :)

That will all change now of course if I become the one that needs to be purged. Always harder on family. ;)

At the moment, I don't have a working camera on my iphone. Maybe I'll replace it for Christmas.

I've already got some awesome ideas for my army theme. But that's a surprise until I post my pics. I'm looking forward to painting something that isn't silver.

Besides, I'm already committed to a GK painting challenge plus my Imerial Knight is underway. So I have my hands full with my main army.

The new year is going to be nids hopefully.
