Hero Sergeants

Any of the Frater out there have any heroic Sergeant models that have done really well for you during games (i.e. beat a Bloodthirster by themselves, faced down an Ork Warboss, miraculously took the last wound of a Tau Riptide to win the game, etc.?

What about any "tricked out" Sergeant builds that you are looking forward to trying out? While they can't take WL Traits or most Relics, Astartes Sergeants can still get use things like Master-Crafted, buff up with Stratagems and Psychic Powers like "Might of Heroes," etc.

Currently, my favorite "Hero Sergeant" build is a Salamander Successor Chapter ("Whirlwind of Rage" and "Born Heroes" traits) Vanguard Veteran Sergeant with a Master-crafted Lightning Claw and Stormshield. Supported by a Biker Chaplain (Re-roll to Hit and +2" charge Litanies, Vulkan's Sigil Relic for +1A and also a +1A aura once per game), Jump Librarian ("Might of Heroes" and "Null Zone"), and the "Strength of the Primarch" and "Crucible of Battle" Strats (both only 1 CP, and affects the entire Vanguard Vet squad, not just the Sergeant), he has proven a holy wrecking machine!!

If "Might of Heroes" goes off successfully (WC6, so pretty reliable), the Chaplain activates the Sigil for +1A, and I have CP for the two Strats, then on the charge he has 7 x S6 AP-2 (AP-3 in Assault Doctrine) Dmg2 attacks that re-roll to Wound. Additionally, he is hitting on 2+s and any 6s to hit generate another free hit, so he often is getting 8-9 hits (i.e. more than the attacks he started with). Finally, on unmodified 6s to Wound, he doubles his damage, so he has the ability to pump a couple Dmg4 wounds through as well! Against opponents with high Invul saves, the JP Librarian can also cast Null Zone, meaning that he can kill multiple 4W Allarus Terminators or 4W TWC with Storm Shields all by himself (this is not even accounting for the rest of his squad, which is quite choppy in its own right with all of these buffs). In testing I have even had him take something like 18W off a Knight, all by himself!

Anyway, enough about this guy (as you can tell, I am pretty pumped about him! :wink: ), what about you all? Anyone out there have any amazing Sergeant builds or, better yet, Tales of Heroism where a "last stand" Sergeant from one of your squads "Krak Grenaded" Magnus and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat?!

My Wolf Guard Pack Leader with blood claws dropped in a pod. They attacked a unit of purestrain stealers. Wiped the unit of 14 but lost 7 marines. A Goliath did a drive by with demo charges and mining laser. Killed the other 2 marines and the Wolf Guard tanked 2 las shots with his shield. Used the Lone Wolf Strat. He got charged by the Goliath. Tanked that and blew it up which killed some metamorphs and that gunslinger cultists with the explosion.

That was the 2nd turn. By the end of the game he proceeded to finish of that metamorph unit, an abominant and a leman russ.

He almost died from overwatch vs that tank. But I spent 2 cp for rerolls on the battlecannon hit and the las cannon. He got in with 2 wounds left and crushed it. Then it exploded and he took 1 wound.

It was the first time I took a WG pack leader for Blood Claws in pods. Normally I combat squad 10 or 2 -5 man

I plan on taking a Relic Terminator Sergeant with Mastercrafted Plasma Blaster using the Honoured Sergeant rules.

Since he'll have 3 wounds now, he'll be like a character from Astra Millitarum only more survivable! And have a powerful weapon.

Sure, he'll die if he messes up the overheats, but he can be resurrected by the Chief Apothecary easily enough.

Love it ! What is his melee weapon of choice ?

Do Space Wolves still has Lone Wolf strat ?

I have a pair of power weapon and bolt pistol sergeants from tactical squads that have punched above their weight for 6 editions. Hell, their tactical squads join them in doing better than average. Hence why my list building starts with 2 10 man, flamer, missile launcher, power weapon tactical squads, and has for nearly 20 years.

I was at a local tournament at my College about... what.... 11 years ago? It was the last time I had actually been able to play on the tabletop. I was doing very poorly against my lecturer (6th Ed. Space Marines vs Eldar), and was virtually tabled. Under our tournament rules, you earned points for winning, points for losing, points for drawing, and additional points for completely tabling your opponent. At the end of the tournament, whoever had the most points would win. All I had left was a single Tactical Sergeant.

He. Would. Not. Die.

No matter what my lecturer did, he would either miss, or my Sergeant would pass every armour save he was called upon to make. For a good two turns, while he wasn't killing any of the Wraithblades he was fighting, they weren't killing him, either. In the end, while I still lost the battle, I was able to deny my lecturer the additional points for tabling me.

My lecturer came in at a VERY close second to our local Space Wolves player (Who was a nightmare to deal with because of how he'd go out of his way to find out his opponent's army list before the matches so he could build something to counter it, but that's a story for a different day. I'm still rather salty about how he handled that match against me. ¬_¬)

Ooooh, I've got one!

+++++

VETERAN SERGEANT  LUDOLF
EMPEROR'S BLADES
3RD COMPANY

3RD TACTICAL SQUAD
+++++

Brother-Sergeant Ludolf has served in the Emperor's Blades 3rd company for the better part of the last 2 centuries, and has attained a number of battle honours - and battle scars.

Ludolf has seen off Xenos, heretics, and traitors alike during the course of his long service.

In an engagement at Quasulu against Aeldari raiders, his squad was laid low by shuriken fire from a squad of Dire Avengers. The sergeant stood alone and cut down the perfidious Eldar, breaking their will and slaughtering them as they fled from his fury. Their nearby Wave Serpent transport was unable to evade his wrath - with Ludolf's power sword shearing its rear hatch open before he slaughtered the crew.

In the Dabadian Crusade, the traitors frequently fielded Vindicator battle tanks - the shattered ruins of once-proud hab-spires a testament to the destructive fury of their guns. Twice, Ludolf was the sole member of his tactical squad left standing after a volley from the Demolisher cannons - and twice did he hold off wave after wave of cultists and heretic Astartes to hold key objectives.

The brother-sergeant is now one of those charged with the induction of the new Primaris battle-brothers into the 3rd company - his wisdom and experience well-placed to serve as an example to the newcomers.

+++++

Thought for the day : Faith is the shield of the righteous, Fury the weapon in their hands

+++++

Yep. 4th edition - killed a squad of Dire Avengers after his whole squad was killed, then chased down and glanced their Wave Serpent to death.

Then was twice the last survivor of his squad after Vindicators shot them to pieces on landing in their Drop Pod in 5th - Morale checks were passed, and cultist squads met in close combat, then run down to secure key objectives.

Space Wolves lost the lone wolf strat, they moved it to crusade where it makes more sense.

-Biker Sergeant whit powerfist destroying a Defiler alone. Lot of look whit my dice, lot of demage whit every blow.

-Tactical Sergeant killing a Chaos Sorcerer whit a combi melta, in overwatch when Instakill exist in 6º ed.

-Scout Sergeant assaulting an Imperial Knight, preventing it to shoot against anything, he survives every single stomp and give time to Guilliman to assault and destroy it whit the Hand of Dominiom. Its was the Primarch who won that fight, true, but that Scout make the day and saves a lot of lives of his battle brothers.

-Terminator Sergeant, he was the last of his squad, decimated by tyranidis, but i put im in a Firestrom Redoubt, manning the weapons, and he kills lot of flying creatures in vengance for his squad.

-Not a Sergeant, but a Techmarine who repairs a 1 wound Land Raider, and the pair managed to prevent lot of guardsmens to capture 2 strategic points, blocking patchs whit the sice.

In my 3e Demonhunter army I had a Justicar that went months without dying. We didn’t start tracking it until my friend mentioned that this was twice he had opened up the back of one of his Leman Russes like it was a sardine can. We would play every Sunday. Eldar, Guard, Chaos, Blood Angels, Necrons and my Demonhunters. It’s been ages obviously but besides a hilarious slap fest where he was the last Brother swamped by 8 surviving Necron Warriors and showdown with a meltagun guardsman where neither could hit or wound, he had other high moments beside tank busting. The Death Company fight down to him and the BA Sgt. Killing Eldrad after losing all his mates. Eventually he did when I pushed too far and charged him and one of his buddies into a healthy squad of Ogryn.

Fun times. I miss the Demonhunters. If for nothing else the Kasrkin models were awesome. If they ever bump Grey Knights to Primaris size models I might rebuild some day.

This was a really long time ago, but memorable. My first tournament was the 1999 (yes really) 40k UKGT at Warhammer World. I took my new mostly plastic 3rd edition marines, which was my first fully painted army. It included stuff like a vindicator, which I'd converted for fun only to have rules appear in the book, despite there being no model. A dreadnought with lascannon and fist is doing great work for me too. Different times!

This was 21 years ago so I don't remember all the details. I do remember that I played people who'd come from Germany and the US to take part in what was one of the only big events there was back then, which seemed a bit crazy. I faced Orks, Chaos, something else I forget and then more Chaos (I remember a lot of Khorne berzerkers who wouldn't come out of a forest). Beat all of them.

So to my slight surprise I found myself on table one in the final game, against Eldar. My opponent had a wave serpent which, in the days before its codex came out, was virtually indestructible (AV14 and you could only get glancing hits, before hull points were a thing). I made a plan to work around it, as by the rules of this event we won if we killed 75% of the opponent's army.

I had a Chaplain leading my army, leading half a tactical squad whose sergeant had a power sword. These guys went through the centre of the enemy army. The Chaplain killed Karandras in a challenge while the Sergeant took out the striking scorpion squad and then they carried on cutting up other stuff, finishing the game with just the Sergeant and Chaplain fighting back to back and dead eldar all around. The decisive moment actually came when my dreadnought ran down a unit of 20 guardians, taking my opponent to <25% of his army alive.

I got this quite nice trophy for my efforts. It had a knife, but that broke off straight away.
