What would you take and why?

Hi all

So I am entering a tournament soon. I have settled on two very different potential lists based on what I have built and painted. I will be playing a Raven Guard successor with bolter fusillades and either whirlwind of rage. I’d love your feedback on each list. Each one is 2k exactly.

The first list is what I call the “take early and hold on for dear life” list:

  1. 4 x terminator squads with cyclone missile launchers
  2. 4 x incursor squads with haywire mines
  3. 5 man boltstorm Aggressor squad
  4. Chief Apothecary
  5. Chaplain
  6. Lieutenant
  7. Landspeeder with heavy bolter and multi-melta.

As the name suggests, it is all about taking objectives early with incursors and then dropping in terminators to assist the incursors hold onto them for as long as possible. The 5 man aggressor squad buffed by a chaplain, lieutenant and chief apothecary provides mobile firepower castle and a land speeder with multi-melta darts around helping where needed.

The second list is what I call the “Fast and mobile” list:

  1. 2 x 5 man plasma inceptor squads
  2. 2 x  5 man bolter inceptor squads
  3. 2 x vanguard veteran jump pack squads
  4. 4 x incursor squads with haywire mines
  5. Jump slash captain with burning blade
  6. Jump lieutenant with ebon claws
  7. Jump chaplain with power fist and combi weapon (probably plasma, maybe melta).

The idea here is to about taking objectives early with incursors and then dropping or moving up a “pack” of inceptors and vanguard veterans, i.e. 2 squads of inceptors and 1 squad of vanguard veterans = “a pack”. I’d run the plasma inceptors with the jump captain to allow the potential for overcharge, and run the bolter inceptor pack with the lieutenant (as they will need more assistance with generating wounds than the plasma guys), chaplain where he will benefit the most.

Drop/move up, shoot, charge in with vanguard veterans to mop up if needed, rinse and repeat across the board. I can do this as 2 patrol detachments, or switch the inceptors to just 3 lots of 6 plasma inceptors and take a battalion detachment.

So, of those lists, which would you take and why? Do you think they would work as intended? If not, why not?

I personally always prefer mobility so I would take the second list.

That being said I would probably try to hybridize the lists a bit. Depending on what your VVs are equipped with, I would take the second list but work to cut a little (Bolter Inceptors and LT) to make room for the Aggressors and Chief Apothecary to serve as an "anchor" unit.

Looks fun either way!

Note: Per what was mentioned above, I think 2x Terminator 10-Man units is better as its gets you more value out of Fury of the First.

Ok ;) I like Incursors and I love redundancy but 4 units are a bit heavy.

I think your fast list would be enhanced by leveraging Strike from the Shadows or Master of Ambush with a tanky unit for midboard melee support. I would drop one of the Plasma Inceptors (and adding the Eradicators saves 50 pts) Then dropping one of the Incursors (saves 105 pts). If you then drop both Haywires (saving 20 pts) you have a total of 175 pts.

You can then add a unit 5 man Bladeguard.

The Eradicators are a natural replacement for the Inceptors of which you have to drop one unit. Keeping the Bolter Inceptors works best with your Chapter Tactic choices. The Incursor units block out the midboard and allow year three units to synergize any Phobos shenanigans that might be useful.
