[HH] Alpharius - Head of the Hydra

This explores Alpharius before he met the Emperor. Tbh I'd much rather that remain a secret. I'm  sure there'll be some "actually none of this is true" twist, possibly right from the outset. Still this is material which is better left untouched.

Normally I'd agree with you but there's still the possibility ("the secret origin... or is it?") that it'll be self-contradictory and full of fiction, etc. That could be done well or not but we'll see.

Not expecting much more than a,

"Or maybe everything I just told you was a lie? [Winks At Camera]"

Yep - or another swerve where the main character turns out to be neither Alpharius nor Omegon, but one of their agents.

Meanwhile I'm still out here wondering who the THIRD head of the hydra is.

Much better twist - have the story be completely off-the-rails and ridiculous, then have someone 'reliable' in setting (Dorn, or pre-Istvaan Ferris, or Perturabo, maybe?) walk on and confirm the whole thing.

Mike Brooks is an exciting choice for this if given the space for worldbuilding at this scale, I think - Wanted Dead was such a great novella. His Rites of Passage and Brutal Kunnin seem to be vwry well-received, as is Road to Redemption (where he takes on some difficult subject matter - although I find it a tad pulpy, but that is the nature of its western-esaue style). Overall a really exciting and promisinf choice of author for the book.

He's also close to the SG team, plays in their necromunda campaigns, for example.

Finally has anyone read his non-BL work; what's it like?

I disagree i love the alpha legion and as long as they don't mess it up it will be awesome to see more on it all.

There's so much in the 40k world that there will always be stuff left vague, doesn't mean it all should be though. I mean alpha legion are actually interesting rather than *cough* dark angels or ultramarines chapter spin-off No 6845

If you're referring to the Black Book insignia showing an alpha, an omega, and a sigma together, I'll point out that sigma is the mathematical symbol for "sum" and probably represents the rest of the Legion as a whole.

I was always a fan of the Sigma[r] theory.

I haven't read any of Mike Brooks's work, initial reaction was confusion that John French wasn't handling it, as he seems to be able to handle complex stuff, writing the Ahriman series and Cthulu mythos stuff, but open minded. Just this book then the Sanguinius one to get my collection of 'Primarchs of interest'.

There's no real doubt in my mind that the resemblance between sigma and Sigmar is a happy coincidence someone spotted during the writing of Extermination, and which was gleefully made prominent in the insignia to put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Bit of a sidetrack but what's the Ahriman series like?

  • 1 year later...

Just finished this. Its the first Primarch Novel I finished (I left the Perturabo one in a pub and someone nicked it:sweat: )

I quite enjoyed it. I particularly liked the use of very short chapters- I found that very engaging.

I said before this was material better left untouched. There's a very large twist pretty much at the start. Other than that its a great exploration of the material and gives a very good insight into the protagonists thinking.

It was a little short but I'd recommend this.

My personal favorite bit is that the book takes all 3 rumours presented in FW's HH3 (right?) regarding the origin of Alpharius and manages to mesh all 3 together into a single story that works. It also explains why the XXth was singled out as a special Legion (again, per FW's blackbooks series), so fits very well with the existing material.

Of course, this is the XXth, so we know it's all veiled falsehoodsb and half-truths...
