Necrons in lower point matches

My regular opponent started building up a deathwatch army for 9th and as we learn 9th and our revamped necron and deathwatch armies, we are starting at several 750 points matches at a time. Gives us more matches to try things out and he simple doesn’t have a big enough marine force yet.

I found my self struggling to build lists that were not just 30-40 warriors and a overlord. Any unit I take I feel like I need to really up the squad size or I am punishing my self.

What are some tips and tricks for necrons at lower point games?

Maybe try taking a cheaper HQ choice.

A Royal Warden with veil paired with a blob of reaper warriors is pretty good.

Based on what I own, I've gone with the below.

use the expansionist 6" movement to get some good board position early

use the flayer warriors to hold a back objective

The max size skorpekhs are honestly terrifying with their damage, survivability and movement

and then just use to scarabs to screen or tie up something in combat

Have to say we've been playing crusade games and all my units have been minimum sized.

In all honesty it's been fine - my opponents have also been doing the same.

It just feels like smaller 40k and works really well.

Warden (veil) and warrior reapers (only 10) have been my best performing unit for numerous games.

That said I've also tried other units too. 5 Praetorians have been v handy too.

Small isn't bad, it's just scaled down :)

I literally can't even be bothered putting in the mental effort to remember/write down my selection for the protocols honestly. Am I alone?

For small points games I like Immortals over Warriors, with 5 bot MSUs being cheaper than the minimum for Warriors if you want to fill a detachment other than a patrol, and T5 comes in handy in small games I think. My 500pt coffee-table-hammer list:

Lord: Res Orb, Voltaic Staff, Enduring Will

10x Immortals: Gauss Blasters

3x Wraiths: Claws

Annihilation Barge: Gauss Cannon, Tesla Destructor

Command Protocols aren't that great, I agree, Vermintide, unless you're using Szarekh, in which case you can have a lot more flexibility with what you're doing with them, but he's not exactly a 'small game' model. I've found them a little useful but as I think ive said elsewhere they're "nice-to-haves", not "gotta-use".
