Greenwing in 9th Edition

Absolutely.

While the DW and the RW get all the accolades for being the usual damage dealers of the army, the Greenwing brothers are the ones breaking their backs to carry the legion around. They hold down the objectives without need for fancy "Objec Secure" gimmicks; and they provide the long range to mid range firepower needed to whittle down the opposition.

The Greenwing are the base for our combined arms, and although our army CAN be deployed as a mono-wing or even a dual-wing force, without the Greenwing, you are just not taking the full advantage of a "combined arms specialist" army into your game.

You certainly benefit from bringing in Azrael to lead your Greenwing force, but you don't HAVE to do it. I mean, c'mon, just as reference, my main Greenwing units are usually led into combat by a Dreadnought with Wisdom of the Ancients! And of my 3 tactical squads, one is usually used as a solo-squad that is deployed to scramble deepstrikers and infiltrators, and acts completely on its own and without Character Support.

Greenwing are pretty good.

Greenwing have some pretty unique units that shouldn't be ignored outright.

Eradicators, eliminators, redemptor dreadnaught, both intercessors, inceptors are all solid picks in any army, I myself run some of these useful choices.

And whirlwinds are amazing chip damage, they don't kill things their basically free damage you soak up over the course of the game like a sponge, you come collect a little bit each turn with indirect fire and the free bs2+ on ours makes it all the sweeter thanks to our chapter tactic.

Then we have the stalker which is sort of like his cousin, the stalker is more mobile, moving occasionally to adjust sight lines, hes anti flyer which is nice and when hes stationary hes bs2, so he can really pile on the autocannon fire. This makes him great against lesser elite infantry, fire dragons and dark reapers as an example, hes great for softening up tempestus or possessed, hes got huge range so really its more about finding the sight line you need and putting someone of blast then anything else.

If you want to look to more exotic units, tactical tortoise has a really good video on the sicarian omega tank destroyer, this could become just wildly overpowered if we get weapons of the dark age back, this is a forge world heavy tank its as fast as a land speeder and armed like doomsday prepper who keeps far far too many firearms in the back of his pickup
