Atrus' Cylek dynasty

Stepping back into my favourite xenos army with quite the kitbash/conversion project- or as I like to call it, CRONversion.

I've always loved Necrons and had them years ago but had to sell them for needed cash.

Finally convinced myself to get back into them and was going to get into the new models, but then I saw the AoS Nighthaunt army.

I don't play sigmar but I loved the look of the army and immediately thought of this project.

Here we have a small squad of reaper warriors I've been working on casually for the past few days.

I'm trying out contrast paints with this project. It's taking some getting used to and still experimenting, but each model is improving over the last.

Currently painting this lot of 10 warriors as I have to wait till the stores open again next week so I can get a scalpel to convert my flayers into reapers for the other 10 warriors.

This is awesome, they look like mini nightbringers! Have you thought about which model you'll convert next, and if you'll keep the same style for those?

Which dynasty would you play them as? Something ethereal like Nephrekh comes to mind.

You're right on the money with the dynasty choice. The dynasty bonuses of the invo save and the special advance, I simply refer to as "Ghosty (save/move)".

I've got several other models assembled awaiting me to be able to afford to get the necron bits to appropriately cron them up.

Have:-

Lady Oleandyr: Transcendant C'tan. (could be Nightbringer but I've always preferred generic options to make "my guys")

Craven King: Overlord. (Maybe a bit big but not by much, but I don't play competitive so it don't matter)

Spirit Hosts: Ophydian Destroyers.

Hex Wraiths: Destroyers. (Didn't like the rider on horse, so left the horse head out and replaced with rider torso and head- gives a Ghost centuar vibe but fits the silhouette of destroyers. Also cut off the exposed horse legs for the hovering look.)

Cairn Wraith: Cryptek- technomancer.

Mortis Engine: Reanimator.

Knight of Shrouds: Lord (gotta figure out how to remove or incorporate that blasted massive sword scabbard into a weapon)

Yet to get:-

Black Coach: Ghost Ark.

Lord Executioner: either chrono or psychomancer.

Lots more Chainrasp Hordes: reaper warriors.

So in short, yes, I plan on keeping with the current aesthetic style of nighthaunt base models with necron weapons.

I just finished painting the last of my first 10 warriors last night and am currently trying to decide whether to paint up the Overlord or C'tan next.

Speaking finished painting, here's the first 10. Apologies for dodgy photos, I just suck at shooting models.

Alright, here's my transcendent Ctan shard of The Lady. Agaon, sorry for potato quality photos. I tried to do a photobox, but it didnt work out well- just got camera on my phone and it couldnt do a giid photo with such low pight and the flash was heinous quality photo.

Given that the official transcendent Ctan model is just a green dude with tendrils coming off, I had no idea what more to do with the model.

So I added in the sister screaming in agony as she suddenly starts disintegrating to Times Arrow mid attack. Something that amuses me as the model is one of the ancient metal ones suffering the effects of time.

Normally I'd have happily made it be a marine being slaughtered, but I'd don't have a marine sullying my collection :p

I tried to position the Ctan to give an image of aloof-ness as she carries on, giving no thought to her insignificant would be attacker.

The contrast paints can be faster and I'm still getting used to them. I can see myself coming back one day and doing some serious touchups; but I'm finding its making me a lazy painter. Just slap the paint on and be done with it is a bad painting habit to get into.

I'll continue to use mostly contrasts for the rest of the project and hope I get better at it, but i dont see myself departing from my usual method of painting which while more time consuming, looks a lot better.

Good idea for the time arrow's effect, and it can't always be marines!

I like to think about contrast paint as just another tool on the shelve, not a complete replacement to usual paints, washes, etc. Then again, I haven't *really* tested them yet; I've only used them sparingly for very specific cases.

I love the composition, but I agree that there might be a bit too much black. I would ideally try to find a third main color to complete the theme, and - if you don't mind straying from contrast paint - enhancing the existing colors with normal paints. But it's hard to be sure without seeing the model in real life or with perfect lighting conditions.

Oh no I agree. Contrast seems to be an okay tool for getting the guts of a model done, but when it comes to detail, proper paint is the way.

I'll definately be going over these models in future for some serious highlighting and detail work.

Any recommendations for a third colour for the theme? I use red for the eyes but it's very small and subtle so doesn't count.

That's very subjective, but too much red - although it's green's complementary - would scream "Christmas". I would lean towards magenta or purple, but would either look for examples online or do some tests, or both.

One thing I would consider would be to use this color to highlight the black parts of you want to keep the current vibe.

Got to converting the gauss flayers I had into reapers and got the unexpected added bonus of getting some necron axes out of it.

I'm out of necron bits, so I'm just painting what I have at the moment with the intention of making the modifications later when the parts become available to me.

Necron Overlord. Trumpet will likely be replaced with staff of light and the scythe will be swapped for a more cron looking one.

Flag will stay, I like it.

I was too heavy handed with the green on this model. Didn't let it thin out to go lighter towards the ends and edges.

Don't know when I'm going to get to buy more crons part for proper conversions, so more painting.

My to-be ophydian destroyers. Took the axes I made from the flayers and put them on here. 3 more if these then will move into my other warriors with the converted gauss reapers.
