Fluff Question Regarding Recruits from Necromunda

Weird question, but does anyone know if the IF recruit heavily from Goliath? It seems like that house would provide the strongest recruits, and to be honest the Necromunda gang stuff regarding houses is a bit confusing to me. Also, what are the downsides? Other than possibly lower intelligence it seems like Goliath would be a perfect source for recruits.

The only stuff I’m aware of regarding Necromunda recruits is the ancient and out of date Space Marines book where they had three gangers from different walks of life recruited in, but that was before the houses were introduced and space marines could retire after 75 years, lol.

I'd say that the house gangs represented in Necromunda are wholly unsuitable for space marine recruitment. Not to mention they're so much at the bottom of the overall ladder in Necromunda that its much more likely the best nobles or at least hivers are chosen, as opposed to those in the underhive.

Interesting. Why would you say that? At least with the Cawdor and Orlock gangs I would have imagined that as normal humans who had to prove fortitude they would be worthy.

I do see your points about the nobles, though. They’d have strings to pull to be the most visible.

Going down the list:

  • Goliaths - they're vat born and teeming with chemicals/ stimms and incredibly unstable. 100% doubt they'd be compatible with the Astartes implants.
  • Escher - obvious
  • Van Saar - broken and radiation poisoned bodies
  • Delaque - just.... Like really weird. Hinted Xenos origin.

Orlock and Cawdor is a possibility, however I think due to how they operate and where they are situated, it's most likely that recruiting from the underhive just doesn't take place at all. Sending off your son to be a Space Marine when they could instead be an able body to work in the forges/ in service to the cult is pretty undesirable.

Why would you go into the murder-sewer when the training grounds exist?

Hive recruitment, whenever its featured in Black Library works, is not overly voluntary.

Because the children in the murder-sewer are the toughest kids in the Hive city, Astartes recruit from death worlds and generally awful places because the children in there have been fighting to survive since day one, they already have the will and strength to overcome the hell that is their everyday lives and thats exactly what the Space Marine Chapters are looking for.

Even though 'Space Marine' isnt exactly seen as cannon these days dont forget Biff Tundrish was a Scavvy, and theres no reason why a poop eating hobo cant get into the Fists when the Blood Angels recruit 'humans' scraping the bottom of the genepool, same with Van Saar I guess.

Just bang them all through the Rubicon and jobs a good un, that fixes everything..

Err....

Blood Angels are able to do that explicitly because their geneseed is super powerful when it comes to acceptance. They're unique because of that

I would guess that the Imperial Fists are equal opportunity when it comes to recruiting. The portrayal from Space Marine described genetic testing to see if candidates were compatible - only those that had a certain level of compatibility were taken by the Chapter. The Imperial Fists don't just round up a passel of recruits - they look for those that have a chance to accept the implants (i.e., survive the medical process).

We can guess at which houses (or other segments of the planet's population) may have more/fewer likely candidates, but in the realm of Warhammer 40,000, anything is possible and even those houses who we might speculate to be least suitable might, nevertheless, have some among their ranks whose genetics might render them suitable for the possibility of becoming an Imperial Fist.

While I absolutely agree about marines lookin' for the hardest stock around, going into the Underhive to recruit is probably a logistical and dangerous nightmare. I just can't see it being something that they'd do.

Hell, who even knows if the Underhive knows about Space Marines eh?

Hive gangers are repeatedly noted in the Space Marine codices as being a prime source of recruits, especially favored for their sociopathy. Off the top of my head, there are depictions of such recruitment in Praetorian of Dorn and Avenging Son; it’s basically a “Kill everyone here and drive the survivors into a catchment area.”
