Some fluff heraldry and other questions from the supplement

1. I've noticed several pictures of 'Eavy Metal painted Blood Angel models  that show the wrong squad markings on the type of marine in the picture. On page 45 (Incursors), and another official GW pic I saw that wasn't in our supplement (forgot where?) but again showing the wrong squad indicator for the unit displayed.

In 9th edition are we still following the standard types of squad associated with squads 1-10?

2. Eye lens colors used to always be green for us, now I'm noticing both in model pics and new artwork showing some red lens (and of course the Angels of Death project in which they all have red lens).

3. Also in the supplement the 'Eavy Metal painted model pics show the Blade Guard units as being members of 2nd Company and not the 1st. I know the answer to this can easily be they're considered "company veterans" in that instance, but I thought they were officially members of each chapter's elite first company?

I pride myself on getting my heraldry "by the book" when I build and paint my models, so I'm curious what the collective take is on these small fluff issues that we're seeing in the new material for our glorious chapter? :)

Thanks.

2. Eye colors are personal preference and not part of an official color scheme. It’s just what looks good.

3. From my understanding squads that are attached to a company take that company’s emblem.

I get this from the recent Space Marine Codex where it says that Guilliman expanded the allowable squads to 20 specifically for attached squads from other companies.

Also, for number what what was the squad indicator you saw?

The one I saw that I recall exactly where it is, is on page 45 of our supplement and also the cover art of the Blood Angel Combat Patrol box. Its the 9th squad on the Incursors.

IIRC prior to 9th Blood Angels were always depicted with green lens?

I've never known 1st Company Vets to wear anything other than their own company markings.

If I remember correctly, standard Company is 6 Battleline squads, 2 Close Support and 2 Fire Support, which would put "yellow helmets" at squads 7 and 8.

I'm afraid that with introduction of Primaris units squads capping often at 3 or 6 at most, the standard Company structure has to deviate from that 10-squads build if it's not kept purely firstborn. That is, if one wants to keep the 100 marines limitation and squad structure that is reflected in the current Codex Space Marines datasheets.

While it's easy enough to make 6x10-man Battleline squads and 2x10-man Close Support squads (Assault Intercessors), we currently don't have Primaris Fire Support 10-man units.

For that reason I personally chose no to limit myself with 6 Battleline, 2 Close Support and 2 Fire Support limit in my take on the 5th Company. I'm making my own mix of squads keeping only the 100 marines limit (+Command). Because I have Primaris units, I will be having 14-16 squads.

Since the new codex Astartes appendix that gulliman has released it's possible to have up to 20 squads in a company. On one side this is connected to the 3 to 6 man squad structure that Primaris can have and further if additional squads are assigned from the reserve companies. Unfortunately it's nowhere stated how this actually works. Squad 7 and 8 are close support, but where would a third close support squad go? Would it be 11 or would it go 17 and 18? Is there still a maximum or could you theoretically assign the whole close support reserve company to a battle line company? GW I need answers!

For what it’s worth, the latest BA novel describes eye lenses as being green - which has always been the ‘traditional’ colour used for them. But as others have said, lens colour really shouldn’t matter at all. As the chapter is all about artistry it would make sense that different marines choose different colour eye lenses.

I like green for red armoured marines and red lenses for Death Company.

Codex has changed. It used to be squads 1-6, 7+8, and 9+10 were tactical, assault and devastator, respectively.

In the new codex, there are 10 units, comprising 6 battleline, 2 close and 2 fire support, but no fixed squad numbers for these.

Likewise, units 11-20 have no fixed tactical role and are simply whatever unit was seconded to that company.
