buying foot guard without a mortgage

Mordian glory has a good youtube video on how to save money when buying guard

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlYdiFikZws

I wanted to add some experiences on my own journey, in hopes it helps other fledgling generals.

The brood brothers kit is amazing value, not only do you get the heavy weapons, it comes with the two guardsmen crew so you dont lose numbers from the squad.

On the heavy weapons team, one sprue can make 3 heavy weapons teams as follows:

1 from the following list: Lascannons, autocannon, heavy bolter, with one kneeling gunner

1 mortar crew

1 missile launcher crew (dont use the tripod, operator can stand)

with 3 boxes of brood brothers you can build 9 heavy weapons teams and have 18 infantry left over

The cadian boxes (5 for £6) can be used to pack out infantry squads cheaply (most people know where they can get 10-20% off)

why not just buy a heavy weapons squad and use cadian fillers i hear you ask? Well the small boxes of push fit cadians are much harder to convert and you dont get the spare parts/special weapons/sergeant parts you need to run infantry squads. whereas 3 boxes of brood brothers nets you 6 of each special weapon and the bits to make 6 sergeants.

If anyone else has any hints/tips, feel free to add, im still collecting myself, could use all the help too

I look at my 20 man boxes from time to time (and the price)... The HWT tricks should be well known by now I hope, plus it helps give them more variety so there's every reason to be mixing and matching bits :smile.: If you're enterprising you can go a bit further, like some sandbags to rest a heavy bolter on or no kneeling legs at all. Another trick though you can't use it as much as not have the weapon manned:

All you need is the handle bit which come aplenty with vehicle sprues (ignore the fact I still used kneeling legs here :tongue.: ).

For those of you who dont mind using third party minis I highly recommend Wargames Atlantic, they have some nice kits that might be worth looking into. Im gonna be expanding my Krieg as soon as their WW1 French box drops.

When I run short of minis I turn to ebay

If you are happy to spend £20+ on a number of troops you can usually get them for £1 each or less if you buy more. I try and steer clear of some of the traders on there as if you look closely at their larger mixed sets they are the mini glue bombs from various deals.  I fell lucky on a £80 bastion deal where are I got a load of sprues with all the accessories on which Ive been using

Also Ive got a load of anvil bits where Ive needed different arms

Another thing you could do to save on HWT is to do something like Etheneus has done (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/364606-etheneus-swedish-astra-militarum/) and make a HWT without actually having crew in there, by making a weapon emplacement with sandbags and some sort of top cover. It looks as it should and no one will wonder where the crew members are, as they would be concealled.
In terms of saving using guard kits, another option is to use the spare torsos from the command squad and using some third party legs or some green stuff, you can make 7 soldiers from that box instead of five, as the heads and arms are more than enough.

£25 for 24 miniatures. That's a lot of troops for just over a pound each. There are also heavy weapon kits available (six heavy Weapons + crew for £25, including some command options)... so all the options are covered :smile.: .

The Great War Germans have 30 to a box, I think the French may be getting more, I cant remember.

In a few months Im gonna be up to my eyeballs in greatcoat minis swinging shovels.

The French will be 35 per box, so you will have 35 greatcoat minis for your Krieg conversions ;)

More on topic, Raumjagers are also nice for guard regiments, although they are still missing in HWT for the moment.

Overall, Wargames Atlantic is a good option for 3rd party based regiments, lots of cheap models and lots of weapons and other wargear.

With a box of grognards you will likely not need any more 3rd party heads, as each box contains 192 heads (4 different types, each with gas mask or open face version, with 3 different sculpts for each).

Overall, historical miniatures are also good for converting regiments, especially lightly armoured guardsmen and historicals can often be found very cheap as well.

Foot guard is the coolest army in 40k and Mordian Glory has an epic youtube channel but i don't buy it!  I want to believe that foot guard is more than a meme army but I just can't. :sad.:

I'm sort of in that boat with Orks currently and AM seem to be point for point superior if we're playing a numbers game.

My long time opponent is moving up to 150 conscripts, crying about facing an assault heavy Blood Angels army which he beat. (The mans a monster...)

Just load up on meme magic and win games I guess. :teehee:

I just played my friend mentioned a week ago and even with out new strats orders seemed just a little obnoxious at the time, I had actually forgotten his army even had strats as I can't recall him actually using any. Ironic, I can't even remember how an army I am building even works.

Just remember.

First one to a million wins! :biggrin.:

I am mostly a builder/converter/slow painter rather than a player, but I really like large numbers of infantry, as it is nice to build them and they usually end up pretty unique (not saying that vehicles and such are not similar in that regard, but those are machines so roleplay as you build them is a bit different).

Obviously, moving them around isn't easy and when I had to put them in storage before my move abroad it was a bit tricky.

At least when I return I will have a few hundreds of soldiers to build, paint and play with in narrative situations (likely playing more in the way a child would do it, rather than something like 40k but still :D ).

Since my fluff is based on a group of different factions, I can essentially go crazy on conversions and have lots of different units from different sources (sci-fi, historical and fantasy, from various suppliers). You can obviously have character with vehicles but it is not so fun :)

35! HUZZAH!!!

I'm blown away. I had no idea it was going to be more than 30!

I see, I see ... I see....  3 boxes in my future.  Not sure if I missed it but do we know when they're slated for sale yet?

Egads, I don't have enough WW1 German gasmask helmets!
