Bootleg Kill Team suggestions?

Recommended Posts

So, I've got Dark Imperium and a Star Collecting Ork boxset. I'm wondering how I can go about playing Kill Team on a budget.

1.First things would be what type of units I need for each boxet to complete a kill team, I have primaris, Orks, and Death Guard.

2.The second thing is terrain, which my father has offered to make some things out of wood, here I would need suggestions on what you can home make with wood for terrain.

3.The rules are another issue, I don't know where I can get the standard kill team books, or if there's a website like games-workshop I can use.

I'm trying to make Kill Team as easier and bootlegged as I possibly can. Mostly to save money, and to get my family to play it on a budget, as well as with my friend Jacob. The terrain will be easy, but I need terrain ideas. The rules are hard to fine for books and I would like some ideas on which boxsets would be basically "you buy them once and you can play". I know Orks will need a bit more units, but I have Dark Imperium so could I play them in Kill Team?

If you can't find the books at your local game store, you can order them through GW's website. If you want to save more money, you can purchase the digital versions from Warhammer Digital. In theory, you can get by with just the Core Manual. That book will give you all of the rules and the stats for the models you have (there are some very minor differences between Kill Team and regular WH40K). I recommend Elites and the 2019 Annual, too, if you're inclined, but I'd hold off on those until you have the core rules and model choices down. Commanders is the least important of the expansions, but some people might find it enjoyable.

As far as terrain goes, while bespoke terrain is nice, you don't need to get too fancy (unless you really want to). It's amazing what you can build with popsicle sticks or the cardboard boxes from food packets. Tons of things you might find around the house work for terrain - thread spindles for barrels, Legos for crates (or put together to form walls or buildings), etc.

You don't need to buy any of the killzones, but they're nice if you can get them. It's just as easy to plonk your models and terrain down on any 22" x 30" area. I've used poster board for killzones (I had to cut and tape two pieces together to get the right size). I've also built small boards with wood, painting decorations upon them. It can be as easy as cutting a sheet of plywood down to the right size, sanding it, and then mounting some feet or felt pads on the bottom to keep it from scratching your tabletop - the more skilled your father is in woodworking, the fancier the board can be. Enterprising players might even use game mats or laminated posters, using dry erase markers to draw out terrain. Again, though, you don't even need to do any of that unless you want to - just marking off a 22" x 30" area on your tabletop is sufficient, especially when you're just starting out.

Kill Team also had markers/tokens that are difficult to come by. If you can't find any of the official ones, or if they're too expensive (they often come with other stuff - you can't just pay $10 for a box of markers/tokens), you can find any number of third party markers that are really good on sites like Etsy. Alternately, you can download free markers/tokens for free from our Downloads section (there are plenty of Adeptus Astartes Chapters, the Death Guard, and Orks currently available, and some day I'll get around to making more).

One other thing to be aware of is the 2nd hand market. eBay is a good place to pick things up, as are various Facebook trading groups.

It’s also worth being aware that you can buy new Games Workshop products from online selling sites and they generally offer around 15% discount. I generally use magicmadhouse.com, but there are loads of different options depending where you live in the world.
