Hey all,

Having been lurking for a while as a guest using this site and various others to get a feel for the Hobby before I committed to a course of action I felt it'd be a good idea to join and be able to discuss various practices and figure out what might make my miniatures all the better for it.

As of now I've painted all of one Ultramarine from the Assault Intercessors + Paints Set. My goal so far is to get a functioning Lamenters army going. After a bit of research and dedicating to my favorite chapter, I then found out through various sources that I may have picked a lofty starting point. So I've been doing my best to research and learn concepts on my own to make them look as good as I may. So beyond that I'd figured I would use this community to glean some more experienced wisdom and hit some wickets I might've missed on my own. I've developed a decent start in supplies. Getting the Paint and Tools set as well as some specific paints I feel I'd need for my army, more brushes, and have a box of both Assault and Tactical Intercessors and some other basic equipment. The main name of the game here is something that looks nice and might see action on a blue moon. Seeing as I don't live near a GW Store or LGS. I'd like something fluffier but still functional and figured the growth of my army beyond these two squads would be something I could lean on the wisdom of the Old Guard in the hobby for.

Aside from that what I'd say my experience with the hobby is a good bit stronger on the lore side of things, most of my experience outside of the Dawn of War Series coming form the TTRPG's, and a small entry into the hobby back in 2014, where I made a rather heartful, if naïve start, played The Guard for a few months and was unable to continue the hobby due to income at the time. Now getting back into it, I feel this community might be just what it takes to hold me down to what I'm doing, as even with the one Mini I've done I'd say it has value far beyond it's cost.

Beyond the Lamenters, my interests later down the line for armies would most likely lie with The Raptors SM Chapter, The Order of the Sacred Rose SOB, as well as a return to some form of the Guard.

After drowning anyone who opens This Post in a mountain of words, I'll leave off by saying have a good day all.

Hi and welcome to the forums, and the hobby in general!

Not going to lie, you've maybe picked one of the hardest Space Marine schemes to start with, both in terms of getting a neat bright yellow, and the chapter Icon. The Lamenters, being a Blood Angels Successor chapter are most often discussed in the Blood Angels section.

How are you finding the chapter badge? I've always wondered about simplifying it somewhat, turning this:

I'm painting a couple of Lamenters up at the moment, and I'll be 'cheating' by using a really fine ink pen to to the squares!

Keen to see some of your models.

Thanks for the welcome, I've cheated a bit myself with a custom set of Chapter Pauldrons with a 3d embossed Chapter Badge as well as embossed sections for the checkered pattern which are the standard pattern you posted first. I'm confident or bold enough to take a swing at a yellow pattern, but don't quite feel up to freehanding on a Infantry Model currently. Especially with the level of detail of the Lamenters Chapter Badge. Might get some freehand practice in with the  Impulsor I have ordered. Aside from that to do the Black Squad Designation with White Low-Gothic Number, I found decent deals on Imperial Fists and Ravenguard Transfer Sheets respectively. Aside from that my main issue for designation is deciding whether I want a mix of companies, which'd fit the ad-hoc nature of The Lamenters more, or attempt to model a full strength company. Looking at the 3rd or 4th as the Red/Green on the knee pad would be a good break from solid yellow and black trim for the armor. So far looking at the various ways to paint a space marine, I really enjoy going through and thinking up the heraldry for each Marine, makes the army feel more real and alive in my opinion.

On ways to do the chapter badge, I've always been of the opinion that Space Marines would be more knight-esque. Sharing a common theme (The Check-Board Pattern and Bleeding Heart in this case) and would be given freedom to display them as they wish, later on I plan to de-standardize my army where it would make sense. And to make things easier for large units, you could use simpler designs as the second you posted, maybe have each squad have their own, or have a few that you spread randomly to give character to different models. And then have more complex and intricate patterns on your characters in order to give them more wow factor. Once I feel a little more confident with my freehand work, I might try this.

Beyond that I'm open to suggestions and new ideas, and as soon as I get and paint the models I'd be more than happy to share them in the galleries. May be a while though as I'm taking a vacation to visit family right after my models are slotted to arrive.

Sounds ace, and I love the idea! Even within the artwork, you see that chapter badges aren't always standard, and you see this especially in arty chapters like the Blood Angels, where you see plain flat transfers mixed with ornately sculpted winged shoulderpads. In addition, marines will incorporate stuff into their personal heraldry which might differentiate them further. Can I ask where you got the embossed pauldrons? Might have to get some if I paint up more Lamenters!

For the ones I received they were a from a seller on eBay. I would say are up to snuff with the GW Embossed pauldrons I've seen based off the Ultramarines in the paint set I got. However, I can't seem to find that seller, most likely sold out as of now. I did spy a set that seemed to be of higher quality that also came in 5(?) variants that would make the personalized pauldrons easier for larger units, however they run $2 USD a piece. I can shoot you a link in a PM if you're interested in that, not sure if it'd be they type of thing to post in a thread like this.

Very smart, you save yourself from what looks like a hellish undertaking regarding the painting of your army-to-be. But you know to keep in character woth them you're expected to die hard but ultimately die.

:biggrin.:

My admiration to you!
