Howling Griffons! What was I thinking...

So I have 8000+ points of 30k Ultras, plus another 1500 points of Primaris in beautiful blue (including both versions of Bobby.)  So, about when the Indomitus box came out I was tired of painting blue.  With so many of the local people starting up new armies I decided to do that as well.

A touch of back Story  I started playing 40k in highshool in 1990.  I dabbled a bit while in the US Army and the 90s, but by 00's I had stopped anything miniature related.  I still read a lot.  I got back into the hobby somewhere in the middle of 6th ed.  I even painted up an entire 2000 point Doom Eagles army for a local tournament that had an award for the best themed army.  My theme was a a RT/2nd ED. only models.   I even played a young teenager with a Tau Army that every model in my Doom Eagles was older than him.

I had followed the HH novels since Fulgrim.  Then I found out some of the local group had been playing 30K for about a year So I canceled my plans to to paint my newly acquired Fellblade and Contemptor Dreads for Doom Eagles and chose the Ultramarines for a few reasons: one, no one else was painting them in the local aera, The HH book 5 (Tempest) was due out in few months.   8-9000+ points later, I'm now the local "Ultramarines Guy."

Recently the the rumblings of some Crusade league started up and I wanted to challenge my self as a painter and do something flashy.  So here are some pics of my test models.  the Drop pod ony has one of the five faces done.  and I'm still thinking on how I'm going to weather it.  The two test intercessors are slightly different, both have the casandooran yellow shading the yellow but  on one I used some agrax eathshade as well.

Very fine work Brother Blitz:thumbsup: Howling Griffons are a great chapter and you've done an exceptional job with the quartered livery. You've also nailed it with those bases. They really make your minis pop. Looking forward to seeing more.

They look absolutely amazing Brother Blitz - thanks for sharing. I think you’ll really enjoy playing Ultramarines... so tactically flexible.

My first Ultramarines army was Iron Hands counts as Ultramarines... lots of conversions.

Thanks for the comments!

Here's how I made the bases:

Step1  Painted the bases 50/50ish mix of Agrellan Badland and Agrellan Earth. I let them dry for several hours.

Step 2  Super glued some small rocks on each base.

Step 3  watered down some Adminstratum Grey and painted the bases.

Step 4  painted the rocks with XV-88

Step 5  gave the base a wash with Agrax Earthshade. (make sure there is no pooling on the big flat areas)

Step 6  gave the rocks a dry brush of Tarllaran Sand.

Step 7  Dry brushed Adminstratum Grey on the base (I was sloppy and hit the rocks to many times)

Still  to do:

Step 8  Add some small amounts of static grass or tufts  (Any thoughts on this?)

Q:Why grey bases?

Two reasons:

  1. Grey is a better contrast to the generally warm color of the model, but not to bold as to draw attention away from the model.

  2. My Ultramarines are on similar grey colored bases, and as I build up the Griffons I can use them  as together in the Crusade league that is starting in my area.

I'd like the credit Trovarion Minatures and Darren Latham for the inspiration.
