Gloomspite gitz in 40k

I really love the gobo faction from AoS and want to steal as many models as I can to make a heavily modified and converted green skin army. Unfortunately 40K doesn’t give the little buggers as much of a spotlight as AoS.

My question is how much can you get away with converting gobos in orks in a way that doesn’t seem... off? For example the squig hoppers, if I slapped some rockets on their backs and called them storm boys would that fly?

What I am thinking is something based off snakebites since they raise the best grots and squigs, well some of the grots evolved to be smart and developed different shrooms to control the general population or orks. As such I’m thinking savage

orks as normal boys,

Squig hoppers as storm boys

Sneaky shufflers as maybe komandos

Squig herd as grots

Rockgut troggoths as killa cans

The bigger dankhold troggboss/troggoth as deff dreds

Mangler squig as.... well no idea lol

Any tips and comments would be great! Also I don’t play in an tournaments but I would like it to be considered a good conversation. I’m not against different lore and using the orks normally, I just love the gloomspite git range and don’t play AoS while at the same time wanting to convert orks in a way I have not seen them done!

Thank you!

If you don’t know what models I’m referring to.

As someone who loves converting the fantasy range into 40k this sounds like an interesting project.

The most important point when I have done such project is visual consistency. That is to say that once you have explained what something is in the rules your opponent should easily be able to identify what something else if it uses one of those components.

So to take your example if a squig with a rocket on its back is a stormboy then all squiqs with rockets are stormboys. Or if you use a custom weapon to represent a certain gun then all other instant of that gun should have the same model/concept. So if I use a volkite caliver model for a plasma gun then all vulkite looking weapons must be plasma weapons and not suddenly have a volkite culverin as a multi-melta.

I would also ensure that the base are correct for the unit that the model is representing (and not necessarily the model used) as far as is possible.

That all said with orks you have more leeway then with some other armies as they are naturally decohesive in appearance.

As you are not planning on going to tournaments with this you are probably fine as long as you explain to your opponents what each unit is.

I think that it’s a fine idea if they are converted sufficiently. Trophies here and there and 40k bits will help a lot.

Gretchin bandits have been part of the fluff since first addition. This would simply be on a larger scale.

You could always use some of the Ork skulls from the skulls box to show they overthrew their once-masters ;)

I use moon clan grots myself in my Snakebite-and-Badmoon army. :tu:

For sure being consistent is important! I thought a lot about that as well. I think the shorter gobos Id put on larger/raised bases to give them some more bulk and height. What I am not sure yet how to tackle are units like burnas/lootas, etc that are harder to do as a gobo conversion. Maybe something along the lines of some orks are more obedient so are drugged less but instead will have chains wrapped around them to show they still are not free? Or some of the grot/gobo leaders used to work with pain boys so they lobotomized the orks and made them like the humans have servitors?

I’m open to any suggestions or links to similar ideas. I just want a fun converted force and still working out the details.

Well why don’t you list the conversions/count as models you have planned and then list the units you have not found a suitable idea for yet.

My first thougth for lootas count as with a goblin focused is a Grot tank like model:

Make your own by combining bits and goblins. Admech Kataphron are a good source of tracks and random guns. having converted some for my dwarf mechanicum I can see a goblin fiting in one.

For burners, and loots for that matter, what about doing goblin versions of these guys:

In fact the skaven range migth give you some other ideas on how to 40kify some of the AoS goblins and trolls.

Weapon teams would be a great place to start! i even have the skaven mortar teams around as well.

So first this would be my first official greenskin force so i know little about how to make a strong or even fun greenskin army. I don't play a lot of tournies but instead mostly just play my local deathwatch buddy in these sickly times we are in. So looking at a lot of the current ork range i could never use something like burna boys because they might not fit the game plan, that being said id rather future proof it a bit and be able to make the "idea" of the conversion carry through out the force. Basically all of this talk to say i am VERY flexible in my plan and am mostly reaching out to the senior Greenskins for guidance lol.

here are some ideas that i have now

rules wise i like snakebites and speed freaks but i would more than likely pick some klan rules to fight my lore.

Lore wise im thinking for some reason i have a badass Grot that grew in power and am inspired from Grom the paunch from warhammer fantasy

https://warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Grom_the_Paunch

some ideas i have are a grot head was surgically attached to an ork body, or ate some wrap imbued creature and grew up, etc etc.

model wise

+Troops wise i still want to use ork boys, thinking savage orks converted a bit for slugga and choppa variants. Maybe they are drugged with mushrooms to be controlled as feral orks?

+Gretchen would be squig heards, thinking something along the lines of the squig herder from the old Warhammer online age of reckoning game where he can summon a gas squig. https://warhammerfantasy.fandom.com/wiki/Hammerwiki:Gas_Squig

the idea would be these squigs shoot spit of gas balls to replace the pistols

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Squig-Herd-2019

+Squig hoppers as storm boys, For this the model has a goblin on the back and i would so some work to make it more 40k like. For example variaing jumppacks or rockets on the back and some simple weapons and armor plates on the squig and rider.

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Squig-Hoppers-2019

+Sneaky shufflers as maybe komandos, these i am less sure on so maybe just add some weapons that make sense to the right load out?

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Sneaky-Snufflers-2019

+Rockgut troggoths as killa cans, these are roughly the same size as killa cans, so just slap some armor plates and guns on them

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Rockgut-Troggoths-2019

+The bigger dankhold troggboss/troggoth as deff dreds, basically the same as the killa cans. ork them up with guns and armor

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Dankhold-Troggoth-2019

+Mangler squig as.... well no idea but i love the model. Maybe i could split the squigs apart and make them Deff dreds?

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Gloomspite-Gitz-Loonboss-on-Mangler-Squigs-2019

Other models i love and would like to include some how,

+Gobbapalooza

+Fanatics

+Loonboss

Looks like you have a good plan/anolagy already in place, a few ideas:

Mangler squig as.... well no idea but i love the model. Maybe i could split the squigs apart and make them Deff dreds?

Ghazghkull

Put several on one base and call it a weird boy, or mekboy.

Tankbusters- the balls are explosivs

Warboss or nob, depending on size and scale, the squig he is riding certinaly gives him some hight.

Mollog could also serve as a warboss or big mek I think, probably more big mek if you have other trolls as Dreads and Kans.

Trok all amazing ideas! The ghaz ideal is really interesting for sure. Fanatics are a great idea as tank bustas and I totally forgot the exist, and don’t tank bustas die when they use the rocket hammers?

Some other ideas I was thinking about is kit bashing grot heads onto some skaven bodies and cutting off the tails and maybe saying they are mutated grots, or simply putting grot heads on ork bodies and saying the grots are stealing the ork bodies and preforming surgery to swap heads.

I definitely think this idea is do able and can’t wait to get started.

Sounds like a great project!

Bear in mind that as this is a 40k oriented site, board rules are that models must fit into the 40k aesthetic/universe, so just bear that in mind if you want to share the models here. Just saying an AoS goblin counts as a grot isnt enough, but if you convert it with a blasta on a 40k themed base etc, then you;re cooking with gas.

Always love to see the creativity of Ork players, will keep an eye on the army!
