Too much basecoat?

Recommended Posts

So I suffer from quite severe indecisive-itis, and I find myself rethinking what colors I basecoat my models with often. My question is, instead of stripping and the hassle that goes with it, how many times does respraying a model result in clogged detail?

If I put a spray base down, followed by a wash even, can I spray it with a different color without losing too much detail? Should I just strip the model? Should I sell it and start over from scratch? What are your thoughts?

I think it depends on what kind of primer you use and how you apply it.

I typically use Citadel products for all my hobby stuff, except for primer. I hate how hard it blasts out of the can, and it goes on thick. I prefer to gently mist the primer on, then just build up layers during the actual painting process. (I use Privateer Press p3 white primer, btw. Great for misting).

If you prime like that too, then you could probably apply a second misty coat. Honestly, I'd just strip, or move on and start with a new model. But I'm terrible like that.

I'd say the best solution to this long term is to pick up some cheap models of the same faction, either pre-owned and terribly painted off ebay (that you can strip) or the less popular parts of battle boxes such as easy-to-build troops.

Work out your possible colour schemes before you start, paint one guy in that scheme, if another scheme comes to mind paint a second in the new scheme.

Then you can compare the two, the chances are this will end up quicker for you AND once you count the cost of all the paints and primers probably cheaper too.

You’ve just got to be really careful with the priming for sure. The primer has to be pretty smooth and flat each time and that’s hard enough to be fair as we all know.

Personally I’d suggest getting a really cheap batch of minis off of eBay etc. Then go from there until you nail something that sticks.
